ohms help

hey guys
i have a question but its hard to explain. me and our lead guitar player always used stereo heads and crossed our 4x12 cabs wich let me play threw half of his 4x12 and half of mine and vise versa. this worked out great.
i have now changed to a mono head. i can change from 4 8 or 16 ohms on my head.
both the cabs say 16 ohm stereo or 8 ohms mono. when i send from my main out to my side to 8 ohms and my extention to his 8 ohms side, dose that mean i should use 4 ohms on my head? or should i use 8 ohms?
it seams very easy but i dont want to kill my head. it seams as if i should just look at it as running 2 2x12 cabs at 8 ohms each but not sure if the cabs work that way. when you have 2 inputs going to the cab dose it atomaticly switch to 8 ohms per side or dose it stay at 16 ohms mono, if that makes sense.
thanks for any help
sean

You could have a read of that.

I think, if you double the speaker load, you halve the resistance, so use the 4 ohm out.

Yes it will automatically switch to 8 ohms each side as you're only using half the speakers so get half the resistance.
