Opinions on Tom Anderson pickups? - Whaddaya think?

Hey, all!

In the next couple of weeks, i expect to take delivery of an old 540R that i plan to use as a project guitar. (Thanks for the tip, Rich!) I'm also considering using this guitar as a baritone guitar, tuning it down to B. Just because i like the bottom end and don't really like many of the 7-strings on the market right now.

The first mod i make will be replacing the pickups. I'll likely rout out the middle single coil slot to take a humbucker, and the neck single coil will eventually be replaced with a Sustainiac Stealth. (Yes, it's an oddball pickup config, but i really like the H-H-X layout.) Now the hard part... choosing the pickups to drop in.

My self-built custom has Duncans, and my Parker has DiMarzios. For a different tone, i was thinking about putting a couple of Tom Anderson pickups in there with special-5 switching.

Specifically, i'm thinking of maybe an HN3 at the bridge and an H2 or H2+ in the middle position. Does anybody have any experience with these pickups? (I'd also like to hear opinions and recommendations from those who have other Anderson pickups.)

I'm looking for something really hot and ballsy for the bridge position (but not ridiculously hot), with a warm but cutting (not nasal) tone. To balance that out, i want something more open and balanced-sounding for the middle slot.

The switching will work as follows (bridge-to-neck): 1: bridge pickup (series); 2: neck coil of bridge pickup + neck coil of middle pickup (parallel); 3: both pickups (each in series); 4: middle pickup (parallel); 5: middle pickup (series).

Any thoughts, comments or feedback would be appreciated!

Opinions on Tom Anderson pickups?

While I've never used *THOSE* particular pickups... *I have used several of Tom's other p/ups on the Schecters I used to play <sniff, sniff. *Had to sell them>. *

My favoites were the HN2+, H3+, and the SD1s.

The H3+ is a high output pickup with a little more 'oomph' than the H2 and H3. *And the high end is a little uh... *'butterier'. *LOL. I hate trying to describe tones. *

I like the HN2 a lot as well. *Hot output with a bit more mids than the H3+. *Thinking about it now, it kinda reminded me of a Duncan Custom with an accent on the mids.

And finally... *The SD1 is amazing! *Especially in my Swamp Ash 7 string. *Wow! *Talk about 'OPEN' tone. *But, also, I'm a big fan of a somewhat traditional Single coil tone for the neck position. *I don't know what *YOU* are looking for in particular.

All of the pickups had a four conductor scenario. *The single was coil tapped and the buckers were splittable.

They will also custome wind stuff for you. *If you have and questions or comments, email Tom or Roy at

Respectfully, Cory
