Overdrive For Metal?
I play a Marshall DSL and like the overall tone of the amp. I don't want to use a distortion pedal pedal through the clean channel cuz that would defeat the purpose.
I want a bit more grind for squeals on leads and punch for rhythem work. What overdrive pedal would be good boosting the gain channel?

Re: Overdrive For Metal?
Boss sd-1 SuperOverdive. Costs very little and always does the "push a distorted tube amp" job for me. There are, of course, many other great options, but none that you can buy for $30-40. At that price you may as well try it yourself.

Re: Overdrive For Metal?
Another vote for sd1, plus it doesn't colour the natural distortion of the amp too much plus if you like the distortion from the amp.

Althought I like the sd-1, I prefer the turbo distortion sd-2. It has more definition for alternate picking/sweep picking techniques and has less noise than the sd-1.

Re: Overdrive For Metal?
Have you tried a Tube Screamer or one of the clones? The Maxxon OD808 seems to be used by lots of metal players.
Rock on!

Re: Overdrive For Metal?
a bb preamp
don't get the listed above unless you want the mids and shape of your tone to be affected.. the bb is pretty transparent.. it doesn't really touch the mids

MXR ZW44, its the zakk wylde overdrive. Your guitar will squeal like a pig, i use it with my Engl Powerball and my Jem.

I love my ToneBone Hot British. They are pricey but extremely versatile, huge amounts of mid control. You can get them used for around $100, too.

Re: Overdrive For Metal?
Fulltone Full-Drive 2 is perfect for that application. I've just bought one to use for just that job, and it sounds great. Low noise, and there is a huge variety of useful ways to use it too.
