Re: Paul Gilbert Tone

If I'm not mistaken he uses a bit chorus, to make it juicy a bit. Chorus added to lead solo tone = AWESOMENESS!!!

Re: Paul Gilbert Tone

and try to copy Paul's pick attack. Alot of his sound comes from it.

This.

Very percussive pick attack that contributes hugely to his sound. Really, just about any medium-high gain without the mids all scooped out, roll back on the bass a little, add a little (or sometimes a lot) of chorus/flange/phase shift, throw in that percussive and deadly-accurate picking technique/attack, and you're gold.

Re: Paul Gilbert Tone

Hand attack is one thing, but having a pickup which responds well to that attack is another.

I bought an old Dimarzio Super 2 and 3 recently from some bald swedish guy with a beard and a 540P-II (guess who :P) and put it in my 540P-II. The Super 2 has loads of attack in neck position, and the dynamics sound very Gilbert-ish to my ears. I actually think it he used it like, 20 years ago.
There are probably other pickups out there which are even better for what you want, but give it a shot if you can get it for cheap

Re: Paul Gilbert Tone

I don't hear scoop mids in his playing.
At least not on SFBADR.
I would have the mid around 5, treble around 6-8 and bass about eight
but that all depends on the amp, pickups, pick attack...
