Peavey Classic 50/50. Help DESPERATELY needed.

Hey guys... a BIG problem here, and I could really use some adivise here...

The output transformers (2) of my Peavey Classic 50/50 were fried due to a power surge (I think)

I wrote to Peavey Electronics. They were very nice, BTW, asking for the replacement parts.

The thing is, they cost $103 each one!! I mean.. Come on...how can you charge that amount just for 2 internal parts? With the cost of only those parts, and retubing the amp, I could buy another used one, since these are selling on **** for $250-$350.

So... any kind of recommendations will be appreciated. Dont know if they can be built home-made(I asked for some schematics last friday, no response yet).

If any of you had the same trouble, if someone just have a 50/50 as an unused backup, and want to sell the transf, if any of you have a spare 50/50 that you dont need.. hehehe.. ANYTHING!!

The amp turns on perfectly, but no sound comes out of it.

Anyway, any help is much needed. In the meantime, Im playing live with a SOVTEK power amp section, borrowed from a friend. Man... it has some serious balls!!

Thanks for looking..

A power surge shouldn't have taken out the output transformers, did you run it without a load or something? Are you sure it's the output tranformers?

Transformers are more than just "internal parts" like a resistor or something. Yeah, that seems maybe a little high for a 50W transformer, but not extreme. No, you can't make one yourself, but with some research you might be able to find a suitable replacement IF you know what you are looking for and want to invest some time in the search. A 50W Marshall style output tranny will set you back a little more, http://www.mojomusicalsupply.com/cgi...e/7021850.html.

Yep, if you can find a used 50/50, that is definitely the way to go, even better if you can get a "parts" one cheaper.

yeah it would probably be more practical to just buy another used one if you know that it is the power transformer , and yes they are high but are also a very large part of the amp .

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50. Help DESPERATELY needed.

Parts bought from the amp manufacturer always have a large mark up. For example, I needed to replace some pots for an amp, the pots cost £1.60 each (approx US$2.50 each) from an electrical component store, from the amp manufacturer they were £10 each.

If the transformer is a standard type, find out who made them in the first place (it will not be peavey) and see if you can buy the part somewhere else.

Having said that, $103 is a lot but isn't completely ridiculous. You might be able to save yourself $50 by doing some research but is it really worth your time?

Transformers are expensive....

What you might want to do is check out www.marstran.com and drop Brian Wallace if he has anything that will work for a Peavey Classic 50. He'd hook you up... bt Marstran makes old Marshall transformer replicas... but you should be able to get an upgrade if that's the way you go

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50. Help DESPERATELY needed.

rgr, it was never ran without a load. I think the situation was worsened by the fact that in South America, we ran 220V, instead of the 110V as in the States. I used a 110/220V transformer with the 50/50. It abandoned me already once, and there was a smell like something burning. After that, it kept working, until it died totally. It still turns on, but no sound.

So j.arledge, do you think that it will be more practical to just buy another amp? Actually if that's the case I'd go for a Mesa 50/50, not peavey again....

but that implies A LOT of saving for me...so, Algiman if I can get the 2 trans for $100 that would be great! Having said that, it would be a constant worrying factor... I mean, playing live and not knowing when my amp will leave me... not funny situation.

I just sent an email to Brian Wallace from marstran. Thanks for the tip red5.

Thank you all guys. It seems that just buying another amp is the way to go. Just when I finally got a RG1527, and was planning to get a Studio pre.....
