Peavey Classic 50 from the 80's?

There is a Classic 50 410 on my local craigslist for $275 which seems like a good deal to me but I dont know how good these amps were in the early 80's? Has anyone had any experience with peaveys from the 80's?

Good tube amps dont come across craigslist very often in my neck of the woods and if this would be a decent amp I'd like to get my foot in the door as soon as possible.

Thanks guys.

IMHO, the Peavey Classic 50 is like a '59 Bassman on steroids. The 4x10 fetches $400 - $500 in good shape in my neck of the woods.

The guy finally posted pics and it doesnt look like it is in very good condition. It still seems like a good deal for 275 but I got to thinking and came to this conclusion: what I REALLY want is a Mesa Lonestar or Rivera Venus6 or something high end such as that. I have a feeling it will be alot easier to talk my wife into a big purchase like that if I didnt already have a tube amp sitting around the house.

Re: Peavey Classic 50 from the 80's?

The peavey classic 50 and classic 30 are two of my favorite portable combos to play though. The reason is tone. These amps are actually IMO, the best combos peavey ever made in the early 80's. The newer ones I've played though don't seem quite the same to me(referring to the 90's models), they may in fact be the same, tubes makes a huge difference. I have a classic 30 that I adore, both for its portability as a practice amp and its great tone. In fact, I've used it as a main amp for many a country/rock gig filling in for some local bar bands, and have had many great comments on my tone and sound. These amps are workhorses. Mine look rough as hell, but I wouldn't part with it for anything. And at that price. Take it.
I paid $350 for my classic 30 circa mid 80's and I've always felt the amp worth every penny of it. The 50's are even better. Doubly so with 4/10's. But opinions are like.....you know.
I think its a great buy. It is a great amp IMO.

The Amp already sold, I gave up the chance for not being completely sure about the quality and my wife complaining about rather having a dishwasher and bla bla bla whatever else. "But its your money" she says. Which actually means "Ill kill you if you spend your money on something you want". The day I come home with an amp is the day I stumble upon one while out and about doing something else. That is how I have had to obtain the last 3 guitars Ive bought.

Re: Peavey Classic 50 from the 80's?

Well its back up for 225 this time. I am going to go demo it tomorow or the next day. I'm a little concerned because the amp A) has no FX Loop and and B) It appears to have two channels but they dont seem to be switchable except through the 4 *2 per bright and normal* inputs. I suppose I could override that with an A/B box.

I saw one small comment on harmony-central about an aftermarket FX Loop from Peavey that you could install in these. But so far I havent found any other reference to it - let alone a source where I can purchase one.

Anyone have any ideas?
