pick attack sound

Hiya there !

I was wondering...
How can one control the amount of pick attack sound in a distorted guitar ?
Right now, I hear them clearly, which is cool for fast runs ( TRRRRRR ), but not so much for slow, sensitive passages.
Is it the pickups ?
Is it the distortion ?
Is it a certain frequency ?
Is it my technique ?

And another: Why do I hear slides so loud on my distorted sounds ? Sliding a power chord ( I know, I'm evil ) is almost impossible right now soundwise..

Both my legacy head and MP-2 sounds have the same issue. Guitars used: Jem7PBK(check out my thread on it at the tech, repairs and mods if you're a setup specialist), JPM100P3 and a malmsteen strat.

Re: pick attack sound

I believe it has to do with the pickup height. Try lowering the pickups and see if you get less attack.

Re: pick attack sound

It's got a lot to do with compression. more compression=more pick noise

Re: pick attack sound

compressor is switched off. However you have some natural compression on distortion ofcourse, maybe lower it a bit.

I'll try both ! Thanks !

Re: pick attack sound

Something else I didn't see mentioned - for a smooth sound I slide my finger up the string with one finger wherever possible, like Vai does if you've seen him play live. For more pick attack I use multiple fingers and pick the string as needed. I don't really think about it either, I know what sound I want, so it's hard to explain.
