Pickup Question - The Secret to Mattias "IA" Eklundh's sound

Hi there,

I'm normally not so keen on trying to emulate other artists' sound, but this is quite an exception.
I read somewhere that Mattias "IA" Eklundh goes directly to his Laney (VH100R?) from his Caparison without anything inbetween (well a cable of course). His sound is one of the best I've ever heard (along with Allan's and Thordendal's (but hey, that's pretty much like Allan :D)); I can't understand how it can be so clear and still not sterile and cold. He can take really weird chords with full distorsion and no mud at all...sheesh. I hope it's not all about technique :D

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here knows what market pickup sounds the most like the Caparison PH-R, which the Apple Horn is equipped with. Brand unimportant. Maybe it could even be possible to order from Caparison? Oh, right! Also, 7-string equivalents are "needed" :)

Thanks in advance, guys.

Pickup Question

Hallåj!

After what I've read about Mattias, he's really into "low tech", so I wouldn't be surprised if all he used was a Laney and a guitar. The best way to find out would probably be to send an E-mail to the man himself and ask him.

Good luck!

Re: Pickup Question - The Secret to Mattias "IA" Eklundh's sound

I have read in a swedish guitarforum
that Mattias changes his pickups in his " signature " caparison.
That the original pickups are weak and put in some duncans of some kind.
I think the signature model should come with the pickups that the
artist uses, but hey that´s only my opinion.

I can't recall the name right now, but he uses a distortion pedal. A less known brand, I think. I'll do a search, and see what I can find.

Also, the Caparison comes with a dual blade single coil, don't know if it's the same kind that IA's using. Some more searching will be done.

Edit: IA's using SD Hot Rails in neck position. The dual blade stock from Caparison is a "Caparison SH27F". Still looking for the pedal.

Edit II: The pedal - AMT Fatal Tube

Then he does use pedals, he kept saying he hates those and doesn't use whammy pedals either . The only pedal I've seen him with is his old butchered Cry Baby wah wah. I suspected that he had changed the pickups in his guitars.

I don't think he use a pedal all the time. I would think he plays through his Laney's without anything else most of the time. I've heard him play this AMT pedal through a Laney LC15(?) and it was metal!

He dont use´s pedals, only a crappy Cry Baby !
The secret of hes sound is that his Pick-up´s are binded like the VH100R !
No muddy on ****ty sounds in those P-Up´s !

And I agree that his sound is one of the best sounds u can have when you play guitar !
And his playing is, I think IA´s the best guitar player in the world........I just love everything he does !!

Actually, I think the biggest factor is the Laney.

Thats the way Laney tube amps are: Clear, defined, amazing.
