planet waves questions..

i needed to get new cables so my dad went and got a whole set of planet waves cables.. i know some of you guys don't like them, i tried one cable out in my rig.. and it really brought out the high end.

my question.. my dad got all instrument cables and no signal cables. the side of the box says use an instrument cable from the guitar to pedals and a signal from pedals to amp, is it really necessary to do that or can i jsut use all instruments throughout the setup as long as i have the shielded and non shielded ends in the right position??

Makes no difference whatsoever which end you plug where. Contrary to popular belief, rings on both ends are connected to the shield, so both ends are identical. PW puts those icons on each end to make their buyers feel "sophisticated" I think. And needless to say you can use instrument cables everywhere, too.

I was under the impression that shielded cables gave too much resisitance to the signal and that unshielded cables should be used for speaker connections and everything after the poweramp.

Is this true, Micro?

Yes, after the power amp two things are true: one, you need thicker gauge wire, two, you don't need no shield.

My understanding was that he was asiking about connections between pedals and amp.

yeah i have a particular speaker cable from amp to cabinet.. that's not the issue. my issue is before the amp and the effects loop.. not after the power amp.

the side of the planet waves cable box shows two types of cables.. instrument and signal.. the instrument has 1 shielded end and 1 non-shielded end. the signal has both shielded ends. it says to connect the unshielded end of the instrument cable to the guitar and the shielded to the pedals.. then within the pedals use signal cables and from the pedal to amp use a signal cable. then i assume in the loop to use signal too.. but i have all instrument cables for everything and no signal cables. micro, you don't think that will make a difference?? cause i really have no idea. i dont' want to end up having the wrong cables.. thanks

I use Planet Waves instrument cables also, and have found no difference regardless of which end I plug in where.

Both ends are actually shielded, there's no difference between them whatsoever. I have one of their instrument cables.

Think about it, if you disconnected the shield from one end your guitar signal wouldn't be able to get into your amp because current needs a closed loop to flow.
