Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

What do you use for gain when recording or doing shows: amp gain, overdrive, distortion pedal/digital effect?

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

I'm interested in what everyone is doing, I'm trying to find my sound and I haven't decided what I like better. I play a Mesa F30 and 2x12 cab.

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

Depends on the song, usually a slightly dirty amp with an overdrive pedal to push it over the top.

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

I like to start out with a relatively clean signal - if you have a really good clean sound then as you drive it with preamp gain or pedal gain it will sound the best. (IMHO)

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

Run my BD-2 set rather mild, and use it to overdrive the clean and both dirty channels of the JSX. Also use the BD-2 to overdrive both the clean and dirty channels of the XT Live pedal board when I use that. The JSX doesn't really need any help, but it ads a bit of sensitivity and sustain that you don't need when not soloing. I also run a compressor 100% of the time to beef things up and smooth them out right up front. When I use the JSX and I plan on soling, I put the XT live in the loop for delay, verb and chorus.

BOSS GT-8!!! i know poeple think the distortions suck. But if you spend 10 mins on one patch, you will find that distortion that will work for most of your stuff. I have. It rocks

Sometimes straight amp gain, and sometimes that with the addition of a TS9.

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

When I just want to record an idea, I just record straight from the pod xt live. Otherwise, I mic the amp, with the pod used for effects (send) or sometimes as a pedal (It sounds brutal when used with the overdrive 2 channel of my marshall).

Re: Poll For Those Who Record or Play Out

Straight amp, for rhythm work, and kick on my Bad Monkey, for more gain during solos.
