Power Tube Wisdom

So I have a Peavey VK212 which as you may know is a 100 watt tube amp. I remember reading somewhere that Jake E. Lee removed 2 power tubes from a 100 watt amp to make it a 50 watt amp for a home recording he was doing. It wasn't as loud for the neighbors and it reached saturation much easier. Well, the rock gods saw fit for me to move into an apartment and two 12" speakers pushing 100 watts is slight overkill. Does anyone know anything about this? Whether or not it will work this easily/any potential damages/which tubes to remove. Any advice will be rewarded with an appreciative thank you!

Re: Power Tube Wisdom

if the amp doesn't have a 1/2 power switch anywhere on it then yes you have to remove tubes.

usually it's the 2 outside power tubes but it can be different for some amps.

Re: Power Tube Wisdom

Alot of guys swear by this modification. You should be able to Google info for your specific model of amp to find out which set would be better to pull. Watch out for a change in speaker impedence. Beware! Once you figure it out, you may never go back.

Re: Power Tube Wisdom

Thanks for the info guys! When you say watch for speaker impedance what do you mean? Just it will change and produce different tones or it could get dangerous? If there is one thing worse than an amp thats far too powerful its one thats far too broken haha
