the Egnater ie4 is my fave preamp

I think our resident Dark Lord of Tone, Jay will agree with me there, he's got a pre-rocktron model

Other ones to try include the boogie triaxis and formula,

I think Brunetti do a fantastic 3 channel baby too

Or you could try the Digitech stuff cos it's got loads of onboard toys

The Rocktron Piranha is a great deal on the used market...

- real knobs (easy edit)
- midi
- three modes
- tubes run at high voltage (sounds more like an amp)
- HUSH noise reduction
- extremely versatile tone controls
- great build quality

Don't be fooled by the factory presets...this puppy need to be tweaked. *

Also if a used ADA MP1 comes up that's something else to try.

I personally like the Line 6 stuff for bedroom levels or recording But don't know enough about them live, especially not for hardcore. But in truth I like what I've heard, plus they're very versatile. Be aware that you have to spring extra cash for the foot controller though.

Another thing to consider would be a Sansamp rack thing... I think they're about £500 new over here. And they can really get heavy!!!

i have a midi footcontroller a yamaha mfc-10, i can change patches with that.

i GUESS i mainly looking for the dual recto type sound as that what a lot of heavy players seem to use. i am atracted to the ine 6 as it has so many starting places within the models

just wanna add...don't get the duel recto or an amp model for that just because "a lot of heavy players seem to use it" ...get something you like...if you plug into a cranked 1x8 fender and get that crazy tone use it (I actually know a guy who used this along with his rig because he liked it so much!)

2nd for trying out a Mesa Formula preamp.
If David Torn's got one, it can't be bad

Pre 'tron egnater. *Good job Jono!

Or I say rip the speaker out of a '54 bassman and use the head as a preamp (and sell me the speakers)

From what I've heard, the Formula pre-amp is more of a newer version of the Studio pre-amp, and that isn't a particularly heavy amp. *I changed mine for a JMP-1, and since you've already got a JMP-1, I wouldn't go back.

For "that" boogie sound (as you say, you're looking for the Dual Recto tone), you'd probably have to get a Triaxis. *I don't know how good the Line6 is at mimicking the Recto sound. *Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the Line6 gets a lot of great tones, but so does the JMP-1, and I'm not sure you'd be closer to "that" tone.

I've heard good things about the ADA MP-1, but I've also heard that the standard progression of players is: ADA MP-1, Marshall JMP-1, Mesa/Boogie Triaxis, so I think you're already one step ahead of the ADA. *They are pretty cheap though, so it's worth a shot.

i found the ada mp-1 to be terrible.....sure it sounded good back in the day, but then we all thought that skinny ties and flock of seagulls hairuts were a good idea at the time too....

a great preamp to get for the budget you seem to be on is a hafler triple giant..it was designed by bogner....3 channels, midi, effects loop.....they can be found for anywhere from $300-$500.....and they sound huge....

I agree that a Hafler triple giant is a great pre-amp, but they're a little rarer over here than in the USA.

The UK has an abundance of Marshalls and Peaveys but we struggle for anything even slightly exotic. Or pay through the nose for it.

The list on a Boogie triaxis over here is £1700 or about $2700 !!!
