Purple Heart?

He guys, I was on the Mesa/Boogie site just a minute ago and I was looking at the custom options (very cool, I want a triple recto in red quilted maple...drool ), and I saw something I've never seen before...it's this wood. It's in the hardwood section of the custom options, and it's called purple heart. Personally, I thought it was maple stained a rasberry color, but I guess they would have it listed as maple if it actually was. So what exactly is it? Ever heard of it? How does it change the sound of the cab and is it better than maple? Questions, questions...

here's the page:

I have heard of it, but never actually new what it was. I thought it was like a 'slang' term like swamp ash?

The neck of my Conklin GT7 is made of a combination of purpleheart and wenge. They say purpleheart is the graphite of nature.

Cheers,
Harry.

I don't know how it would be as a tone wood, but it is certainly purple, and it is extrememly hard. Think cocobolo or lignum vitae hard. They sometimes build bridges out of it.
As a neck wood insert, it adds strength and beauty. Lots of companies use thin strips of it in multi piece necks, and you can certainly consider it an upscale appointment in that regard. As an amp cabinet wood, it would be beautiful, but possibly prohibitively expensive. I'd rather a plain tolex Mark IV than a purpleheart something cheaper myself.
It's an oily wood, and holds an oil based finish very well (it will brown over time without a finish). In big blocks, it's very striking. Where it looks really awesome is inlaid in a wooden parquet floor. Anyway....
