Question on guitar wall hangers vs. stands

Hi Folks,

After seeing numerous pictures of people with their guitars hanging on walls, I'm curious about the hangers used.

- what companies sell those?
- are there different styles of wall hanger and if so are some better than others?
- do they need to be mounted on a wall stud or are drywall screws enough to hold the weight?

Thanks!

String swing- I had mine screwed into the studs I wouldn't take a chance on the drywall.

Absolutely dead right. I've seen waaaaaaay too many accidents involving those things screwed straight into the drywall.

The studs are the way to go. If they're strong enough to hold up my house, they're probably strong enough to hold up my guitars. I'm super paranoid, though...I can't bear to put any guitar on those things that aren't acoustics.

Anyway, string swings (and similar devices) are available pretty much everywhere. By and large, they're all pretty much the same, barring features like non-reactive materials and such.

I've got a Dixon hanger that rules. It's very clean-looking (classy). Drywall is fine if you've got the right screws - I mean a guitar only weighs 10 lbs max - it's not like they're 50 pounds. Just don't do chinups from it.

got 6 of these for all my guitars : (Hercules GSP39W)

"The Auto Grab™ System (AGS) is driven by the weight of your guitar. Place the guitar in the holder and the mechanism slides down while rotating two protective arms that will hold your guitar securely until you remove it. This wall mount comes with screws and Special Formula Foam (SFF) mar resistant protective cushions"

can't fault them really, amazing quality and you really feel confident when the guitar is grabbed by the arms of the hercules. Quality piece of kit IMHO, had them for 4 years and will buy the same again when I buy another guitar.

HTH.

Which kind are best for the guitar hanging against the wall vs. dangling free? I think I'd prefer to have the guitars sitting as flush against the wall as possible.

If you do it right you dont ahve anything to worry about going into the drywall. The white plastic screw in anchors are rated to hold atleast 25 pounds. I have a few of the string swings in drywall and a few in studs with no issues either way. Obviously you have to do what you are comfortable with, but if done right, the drywall will be fine.

I did mine into the drywall. Now after reading some of your opinions im starting to worry haha. Although, I think I should be fine. I tested them by hanging on them and I am a lot more than 25 pounds...

Re: Question on guitar wall hangers vs. stands

While drywall normally will work if done right, I still won't trust hanging my good guitars just on drywall. I use the String Swing slat-wall hangers that hold the guitar away from the wall at an angle. I have very little wall space, and these pack a lot more guitars in a much smaller space. I make my own custom slat-wall board to hang it on, so that part is practically free, and very sturdy. Plus the String-swing foam won't eat nitro.

Nothing to worry about man, Im in construction and I've hung things much heavier than guitars in drywall without any problems. They specifically make dry wall anchors to be able to hold quite a bit of weight. A lot more than the 7 or 8 pounds a guitar would weigh.

The Hercules ones are cool - I've got one of them as well - but to be honest they're ugly as all hell. And I find they're a bit of a pain with locking nuts (only minor).

I just worry about it getting yanked on and coming loose over time. They have those anchors that butterfly out on the inside of the drywall that would probably work fine.

Re: Question on guitar wall hangers vs. stands

I've installed mine with metal anchors instead of the plastic ones that came with the string swings and none of the 5 holders that are on the same wall are screwed into the studs. I bought the anchors at home depot and went with the ones that are rated to hold 30 pounds each just to be on the safe side. I have actually used the butterfly ones that Dino was talking about to hold a wrought iron decorative stand/hook in my kitchen and that thing was heavy as hell. Those butterfly ones are rated to hold 90 lbs each, so it's all a matter of preference.

Our other guitarist has about 10-15 of these in his music room, with his collection constantly mounted on them, and he loves them. Nice design.
