rack multi effects units - -what are the best ones?

what do you think the best rack multi effects units are?

categories
less than $400

$400-$1000

more than $1000

I am interested in quality, tonal transparency, ease of programming, midi programming and preferably one or two unts in size.

Thanks in advance

Simon

rack multi effects units

Well I'm not sure about your US prices, cos things are so much cheaper over there, but here are my recommendations for gigging units

Firstly the Digitech 21xx series. Personally I like the earlier units better the 2101 and 2112 rather than the 2120.

If there's the cash available though I reckon the TC g-force and the Lexicon MPXG2 are the best gigging units around at the moment without having to make friends with Mr. Bradshaw

I personally think if there's a really tight budget, that one is better off with a few pedals and/or a floor based effects unit

For just effects, a Rocktron Replifex works great for me...for all-in-one, a Chameleon or Voodu Valve.

The Digitech 21XX series are preamp/effect units, are you looking for just effects? *The Replifex is a great guitar unit. *The Lexicon MPX(?)-100 and 500 are great affordable units as are the TC Electronics M-One and D-Two. *

My Experiance is limited in this area but I can tell you that the combo between an SGX-2000 express (800 programable channels with alot of pre-sets) using a Rocktron Intellifex includes a built in HUSH (reprogramable, download's also available via the internet) on the stereo channel is un-friggin-believeble for the shear number of sounds and combinations available..... All controlled by the ART X-15 footboard which is total Midi and has 2 variable and seperatly programable foot peddle controllers...

All 3 of these unit's are less than $400 in the good used market....SGX 2000 Express figure on around @ $200 The Intellifex probably @ $250 and the X-15 vary's between $125 and $175 for one in excellent shape..

Digitech is also a wonderful product although I do remember the earlier one's Pre-21xx series had a few problems with their boards (since then they have improved greatly).

The all out best unit IMHO you can put in a rack really isn't what I would call a multi-effects unit it's the BBE Sonic Maximizer. I had a 422A in my rack because I was running stereo but all in all your going to notice alot of dynamic punch with that one little unit no matter which model you purchase....Plus they are generally under $150 used in excellent condition....

One side note on one of the programs in this combo I have literlly hit a note and gone to the store came back ate lunch and went back to the guitar and it was still playing that same note (sustain forever LOL I don't remember the channels I was using but it was a combo of preset's) Kicks the gibson family to shame sorry all you Les Paul guy's but that was with an RG 550 and standard pups..Yup same volume and tone till I muted the string just to prove a point to a freind about rack stuff.....

Just my .02 for what it's worth.....

rack multi effects units

Thanks for all the advice guys *

just to put you in the picture this is what my 10 U rack looks like:

from the top
Furman PL8E (power conditioner)
Korg DTR2 (tuner)
ADA MP-1 preamp
BBE 422
Rocktron Patchmate with Hush
Lexicon Reflex
ART multiverb alpha 2
Marshall 9200 (100W valve power amp)
all goes into a Marshall 1960AV 4x12 cab

I also have a Marshall JFX-1 that I am testing which may replace the two multi effects.

My pedals are a Morley Wah and an ADA MC1 midi foot controller.

I am actually looking to replace the effects units that I have (ART, Lexicon and Marshall JFX-1) with just the one unit which would do everything I want.

Effects I use are Reverb, Chorus, Delay and Flange.

so I guess I would be looking towards something along the lines of a (cheaper) lexicon or tc electronics unit. *My budget wont stretch to a lexicon MPXG2+R1 or an eventide harmoniser!

cheers

Simon
ps I use an ibanez guitar with this lot!

Get rid of the ART and use the money towards the TC Electronics G-Major, it's $499 and your jaw will drop with the difference in quality of the reverbs and delays.

Only problem is they're back-ordered right now, so might be a few months beofre you actually see one.

Hi Simon,

I suggest you take a serious look at the Intellifex, it handles all those fx that you listed and does it brilliantly, also you can pick up a used one for around £200. *If you want to spend more then perhaps try the MPX-1 or TCs M2, I've seen both of them for £275 - £350.

The Marshall JFX-1 is a great bit if gear. I have used one in the past for gigging and loved it. It is so easy to use and sounds great.
