Rack power amps vs Heads

I've had a lot of gear over the years and I still don't get it.
Is there something to be gained by using a head with rack gear.
You tend to get a lot of extra noise because of the extra preamp in the head.
I've tried going around the preamp by going directly in to the return on the effects loop to avoid the preamp.
I have no idea how much input it can take before I blow the head up.
When you run the rig this way you are just using the raw power amp.
It would seem to me the same as a rack power amp?#$^&
But why do I see all kinds of pros using heads at the end of their rack

Because a "Rack Power Amp" doesn't always sound as good as a
tried and true head.

Right now, I'm using my Legacy as a Power Amp by running my rack
through the Return. I get a MUCH better sound out of this then I do
running the rack through your typical power amp.

Now, when I say typical power amp, I'm not talking Soldano or VHT
rack mount Power Amps. Those are in a class all by themselves and
I've seen many pros use something of that caliber over a head.

Also, as far as I know, Steve Vai and Satch both have their "Rack"
running through the effects loop and both use the PreAmp on their
respective amps for some tonal control. In the case of Satch, he's using
his DS-1 through the clean channel on a Marshall, then his rack through
the effects loop and back into the head then to cabs.

I personally would rather buy a pair of used Legacy heads for say $600
each then spend $2500+ for a VHT power amp.

Dude, a VHT poweramp is not $2500+. I payed less than a grand for a brand new 2/50/2 a few months ago.

(sigh)

It was just an example!

Next time I'll use "Insert Name of Expensive Power Amp Here" if that
makes you feel better.

Do I need to separate you two?! Go to your rooms!...and while you're at it make sure you leave your rack/s with me...

OH, and while we're at it...does anyone ever experience a drop in volume when using their heads as a power amp? Im using this Trace Elliot Speed Twin head..and even with all the knobs (mix send/return levels) on the back turned all the way up there's a huge drop in volume when both using something in the loop, or just using the power amp. Anyone know what's up with this?

Generally when you run stuff through the loop, you have to balance the
input (especially) and the output on whatever processor you're using.

Also, the quality of the loop circut can make a big difference. Most
manufacturers cut major corners when it comes to effects loops.
