Rackmount pre amp

Anyone know any other good rackmount Pre amp besides the TriAxis ?
I have the TriAxis, it's good but I'd like to get any other pre amp in back-up and/or get another sound type of sound.

I've tried the JMP-1 of Marshall... well it's discontinued (?) so I have to buy used

I also heard about a Rocktron one that doesn't seem to have pre amp tubes I think ....

Any other good to suggest

Thanks

Re: Rackmount pre amp

Hey Man!! I use a Rocktron Vudoo Valve and I love it. Its a PITA to get a grip on because of all the controll parameters but its well worth it in the long run. The main thing is getting a grasp on the midi controllers. I controll 16 different paramerters all at the same time using 2 different midi controllers (8 each). You can bet I have it all back up to a hard drive plus a hand written map.

Re: Rackmount pre amp

There are quite a few rack preamps out there:

ADA MP-1 (also discontinued)
Engl 530
Sansamp PSA-1
That modular Randall one
Other Mesas: Studio, Quad, Formula
And the more exotic ones: CAE, Soldano, Egnater etc.

And then there are all the digital ones: POD PROs, Yamaha DG1000, Digitechs...

More to choose from than just the Triaxis and the JMP-1

Another highly recommended preamp is the ada mp-2(yet another discontinued). I had one for quite awhile and there are almost too many parameters to control your tone. adadepot used to have some but they were usually running for about $300 in excellent shape. They can be found on evilbay most of the time, usually w/ midi controller for $300 or less.

Re: Rackmount pre amp

Have you tried some of the settings you find online?
I found some pretty good ones on the Mesa Boogie forum.
It seems when i get bored with my rig, a minor tweak here or there reignites the fire.

Also, if you want a great tutorial, read the manual on how to use a continuous controller to morph one patch into the next.
VERY practical.

Re: Rackmount pre amp

Peavey Rockmaster, all tube... better than any MP-1, JMP-1 or a hoard of Rocktron products plus its dirt cheap... stick some GT's in and your ready to rock.

Re: Rackmount pre amp

I have a JMP-1 and I like it.

It was one of the most popular units, so spares shouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately there are loads of preamps an everyone will reccommend the one they have.

ADA 3TM Ultra or Ultra+. You will NEVER need more gain than what these can supply. I had 3 down to 1. Work flawlessly, great support at ADADepot and great for all genre's from 80's to DM.

Sold one to a guy sold on his Triaxis tone, now he can duplicate it with the 3TM, it floored him.
Also heard good things about ENGL gear

You could always TRY and find a Bogner Fish.

In all seriousness, what about a VHT Valvulator? I've heard they're pretty good.

/\

Jerry Cantrell used on of those, and i love his tone, so i'd say + 1 on the Fish.

That's why I recommended it. I'm a Cantrell fanatic.

There are only about 200 in existence, though.

Re: Rackmount pre amp

If you wanna get really out there, have a look for a Soldano-Caswell programmable preamp - it's so non-digital that the rotary pots have servo motors that turn them when you change MIDI patches!

Not at all cheap BTW........
