RC Booster

Now I know I might be going off in different directions looking for that right sound, because I really am. Like I've said in other post I'm liking Mesas a lot now, but they're expensive, and I would like to still find a way of getting a better sound out of my XXX because A. I can save money as opposed to buying a mesa and B. Its small and portable (1x12). Crunch channel (#2) is good. The cleans are eh ok and the ultra channel is a little too much. How bout an RC Booster in the clean channel what would that do? And what tubes would tame this beast a little bit? Thanks
