Re-Tubed my Legacy *JJ's, 6L6's*

Hey, I just wanted to start this thread so I wouldn’t forget to fill in the blanks tomorrow. Right now I've got to go to bed.
Just a quick fill in though; the volume of my legacy was fluctuating and so I contacted Bob at euro tubes and ordered a whole new set of tubes. JJ's 12ax7 model *Forgot the name* and JJ 6l6's. For all of you legacy owners out there that complain about the lack of gain in a legacy, I suggest retubing with these. I put premium graded preamp tubes in V1 and V2 and this increased the gain INCREDIABLY. Believe it or not, this amp actually saturates now. I also HIGHLY recommend switching to 6L6's, these tubes completely opened up this amp. I will comment more tomorrow. Goodnight.

Jay

hi jay, you mentioned that you put in premium graded tubes in V1 and V2. are they the balanced, matched or graded for high gain ones? i do not have a legacy though but own a MTS and been trying to figure out which power tubes to change them to. 6L6GC or EL34? anyone?? i'll defintely change the preamp tubes to the one you've just recommended!!! thanks for the info Jay!!!

they were graded for high gain. In the MTS I might go withthe E34L's instead of EL34's but the 6l6's are always a good choice too. I think with high gain tubes the MTS will REALY scream.

i don't think they have to be biased after all. its just like you're replacing the same preamp tubes, which is a whole set of 12ax7.

Jay, thanks alot!! i'll definitely look into the E34L. i was thinking of EL34 in the beginning along with the 6L6 which people says has a darker tone. by the way, what's the difference between the E34L and EL34?

You do need to have your amp re-biased if you're replacing power amp tubes. I think preamp tubes are okay.

Bob said the bias is usually dead on on Carvin amplifiers so a rebias is not necessary when going with 6L6's or EL34's that Bob knows draw the right ammount of current(?). www.eurotubes.com has a description of the differences between the EL34's and E34L's. I think the E34L's have a tighter bottom and more punch... I almost went with them.

Sure Bob will say that. Tubes running too hot mean more revenue to him, because they'll die sooner (and if they're running too cool, you're likely to hear that yourself). Get your amp re-biased ASAP.
