recommendations for guitar books for a high school?

Hey all- I work in a ninth grade building and was asked by the libraian to recommend some guitar instructional books for all the ninth grade wanna-be guitar stars. The school already gets Guitar World (wish mind had) but they are looking to add something for the kids who want to play but don't want to learn "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Any suggestions? Thanks!

If your looking for instructional books I'd recommend Fretboard Logic.

http://www.billedwards.com/frameset.html

It's a basic method to learning the fretboard, the basic chord forms applied all over the fretboard, as well as scales built off those chords.

Check it out.

For the more advanced-minded guys, "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar" is a VERY comprehensive look at the physical side of guitar playing... I wish I'd read that in 9th grade, lol.

For Beginners, Nirvana's "Unplugged" and a good Beatles songbook would be useful, IMO.

The tablature for Steve Vai's For The Love of God... give them that and be sure that they will not play for long!

I found Troy Stetina's "Metal Rhythm Guitar, Vol. 1" to be an excellent start. 9th-graders might not find the musical references to the bands of my youth relevant, though.

I agree with the fretboard logic books. They are great, not only to they provide a approach that is unique to guitars and don't try to confuse you by relating non-correct things to other instruments but if provides a great understanding of a great method that really gives you lots of freedom to play.
