Replacing tubes

I have just replaced the stock tubes of my 5150 head with new JJ eurotubes and the new ones stick out a little further than the old ones so I can't completley put the cover back on. There is a foam strip on the inside of the cover that could be removed and free up some space but I want to know if it is important. It looks like it held the originals in there nice and snug.
I could leave the cover off altogether but I'm in a shared rehearsal space and lots of partying etc. happens when I'm not around so I'd like to keep the tubes safe.
