Reverb questions.

Hi guys,
new to using reverb and am just wondering is a reverb pedal better in the loop or in front of the amp? Being time based I would imagine the loop.....
Also can anyone recommend a decent reverb pedal that wont kill my bank account? Im looking at the tc electronics hall of fame.

in the loop it will sound super wonky in front with distortion.

I am using the EHX Holy Grail, I like it, simple and good.
