rig help

right now im getting ready to buy a mosvalve 80 watt power amp, either a tech 21 psa 1 or a lee jackson perfect connection preamp, and building my own 2x12 cab using 100 watt celestions, now i was also thinking of putting a intellifex in there as well and building one solid enclosure for this, effectively making my own combo, do you think this setup could handle a progressive metal tone?

So you're thinking of including all of this into a single unit?

It sounds cool but I think it'll end up being a bit awkward in the end. You'll want to leave some cooling space between the rack units. I'm not too familiar with all of these pieces but I know the PSA1 a little bit. It doesn't sound like the result would be too top-heavy but if you ever go with an all-tube power amp-that could change. The overall sixe might be odd when lifting

The other thing I'm thinking about is that if you make this to safely accommodate the rig described above, it may be an inconvenience if you want to swap out one of the units for something of a bigger size. It may not fit in correctly along with the other units. Just something to think about.

I was thinking of doing this aswell, to make my rack system a tad easier to transport - but I decided against when i bought a spring reverb unit, those things dont like to be vibrated by bass notes...

Are you talking about getting the Tube Works Mosvalve 1160? If so, I can only give you my experiences with that amp. It sounds great but it definately has a sweet spot and if you get it too loud the tone gets brittle in a hurry. You better make sure it's loud enough for what you need and be sure to use 8ohm and not 16ohm speakers. Also, the pots on those power amps are notoriously bad. You need to look into getting them replaced as soon as possible to save yourself a real headache down the road. Again, it can be a perfect amp in the right setting, but I have definately been in situations where the volume was there but the tone was gone. In other words, it can get loud, it's just that your tone can fall apart at high settings. If I were you, I would look for the big brother to this amp which is the 1500. It's not that it gets louder, it's that you will have more headroom and your tone will retain its fidelity at higher volumes. Good luck.

got the poweramp today, started designing the combo amp as well, thinking of going with a powdercoated sheet of diamond plate for the face, other then that all i know is that it will have either red, blue or silver tolex
