Attempt #2
I've been intending to post a review on this ever since I bought a Sub-1 a few weeks ago, but have been waiting for the "new gear honeymoon period" to expire. The botttom line is that the Rivera subs are sonic crack for guitarists: instantly addicting.
I have the single 12 version, ported cabinet, EV speaker (I think), 300 watt Carver
power amp built into the cab. Built in crossover to filter out *mids and highs, effects loop, separate inputs for low level (effects/line level) input and a speaker level input. You can hook it up to just about any amp with or without a loop and still use outboard gear because you can send a signal back to the host amp's loop.
I use it mostly with a Lexicon Signature 284 amp (all six mighty watts of tube power), into a
Mesa Rectifier 2X12 cab and also with a Boogie DC-3 1X12 combo. The results are stunning, kind of like AB'ing a normal stereo with a full surround sound system, much more three-dimensional sound. Guitars are a UV777PBK, an RG 7621 (both stock), and an ESP MKII deluxe with EMG's. *It works great at all volumes from bedroom on up, but i tend not to use the sub late at night to preserve my relationship with the neighbors (apartment living sucks). The DC-3 did not work well with seven strings, it just couldn't handle the bass. Now, I may even reconsider selling it as it just screams with the sub-1 and has punchier, tighter bass than a half stack.
I hate to sound like a Rivera advertisement, but as one off those guys who has spent way too much money on gear searching for that tone I hear in my head, I've never been happier with any gear purchase. I think that any seven string player owes it to themself to check this out. Works great with sixes too though. *You might discover that one of these will give you the sound you're looking for with the gear you already own and save you a lot of money in the long run.
The other day my wife stuck her head in the back room to see what new CD I was cranking and found only me and my UV. She couldn't believe that I could play that well or sound so professional. Better sound = more inspired playing.
