Rocktron Prophesy

Ok, I know I've wrote things like this a million times..but oh well. The dilemna...same as usual. I've heard that the rocktron prophesy is a tweaker's dream...(pre, post, and global eq..etc) and the fx in it sound great...but is it worth the dough? I dont care honestly at this point if something is all tube. If it is...great..if not..oh well. I just want great tones with good fx and not have to tapdance for them. I have a head to use as a power amp, so I've got that covered..I plan on trying one out regardless..but I have to drive to a Houston or Dallas GC to try one. I just want to know is it worth the trip in the first place? I'll be visiting a friend in Houston anyway, he used to own one and said it sounded great but he sucks at setting things up so he returned it . He's just not tech savy...I am..I LOVE being able to sit and tweak for a long time and not run out of tones. Has anyone/does anyone use one or own one? And while we're at it..has anyone had the time to try out the vht preamp?

I have never used one, but I heard Gary Hoey on one here in Detroit last winter. It sounded incredible.

Once again, an unreliable source for info on gear is Harmony Central's User Reviews. For every 5 "dood this thing suxs" or the 10 "dood I gave this thing 10's across the board because I spent 2k on it" reviews, you may find one honest and helpful review.

Good luck.

I've sat and played on one for like 3 hours. They are killer man. VERY nice tones. I think they are better than the POD personally. But very tube sounding and has great sounds and a great feel. Yes you can tweak the hell out of it. But it's a great piece of gear. I would buy one if I wasn't broke.

i used to burn deeply for one of those...
But im happy i never bought one a few years ago wheh i wanted it.. now- it just doesnt do the same thing for me.

Im thing the gains on it are the main draw back for me.

and for the pric they are... definately not worth it to me anyways..

good luck

My friend owns one and drives it through a Marshall 9200 power amp. That thing sounds heavy as hell. Great tones all around. There is a lot of room for tweaking. But to be honest, I can get all of those preamp tones out of my Chameleon. The Prophesy has some additional specialty effects. However, if you put a Chameleon & an Intellifex together, you basically have a Prophesy for WAY cheaper.

Well last night my girlfriend and I were in town...I picked her up from her dorm at SWT, so we went and I decided I wanted to see if they had a prophesy in..THEY DID! You'd think that if you had a piece of rack gear for about 1400 bucks, you'd want to display it..but it was kinda 'forgotten' in the back stock room..lol. The guy checked on the inventory computer and found one, so he offered to go track it down and attempt to hook it up so i could try it out.
He took it into the tryout room and I told him to try hooking it up to a mesa 20:20 power amp. Well, I only tried it out for awhile..but it sounded great! I was honestly amazed at the tones. Now, I'll have to try it out again, because the 3120 i tried it out on had strings that were all corroded, SOO...pick squeals were kinda weak. I'll take my 3120 with fresh strings on it. I just realize that some processor type preamps dont pick up things like that the way a good tube head does, so I want to make sure it was just the corroded and almost rusty strings. Of course I just tested the presets, and I realize that's not the best way to judge a piece of gear...but without first knowing how to run it to make my own patches it made due. I still say my favorite features are the pre, post and global parametric eq's. You could make a patch based on either mega drive or the british(which has some great lead tones going in it...) and set up the post eq's in say, a legacy's eq frequency settings and although it wont sound exactly like a legacy..hey..it wouldnt hurt for a certain vibe. All in all I'm definately interested...the effects were great by the way. I just need to read the instruction book to figure it out more...it wasnt TOO hard though from the looks of it. And live tweaking is pretty easy with the front knobs. What's really cool..is I found a GC employee who's pretty cool. He told me no one ever comes in interested in the prophesy so any time I want I can come in and he'll hook it up so I can try it out some more.

Any time I have ever tried a rack unit in the store, the presets always sound too wet. They try to show off the effects. Some of the patches they showcase a single one.
I think to myself, who would use this preset the way it is?
Many times I have seen a really nice rack unit pluged in to a 1x12 or 2x12 cab. Even a crappy 4x12 will destroy the sound of a great rig.
When I bought my Rocktron Chameleon, I loved a few of the presets.
When I got it home I hoked it up to my rig. I ended up tweeking it so much I can't stand the presets I loved at the store. They sound so week compared to my custom sets.
I tried a Tiaxis three or four times before it sounded good to me. The rigs at the two GCs in my area push amps more than rack gear. It took alot of time before they had it setup right.
