Satch and Peavey
I went to G3 last night and saw Satch playing through Peavey Triple X's. I thought that he had a deal with Marshall. Am I wrong? Or is it just the peavey box and not the Peavey guts?

If they're "heavily modified" XXX heads, i wonder if Joe's going to become a Peavey endorsee with his own signature amp.

i asked joe about them ..
channel 1: cleaner than his 6100
channel 2, crunch: guts from a
peavey classic
50 (which he loves), revoiced
channel 3, ultra: the xxx crunch channel with the gain backed off and revoiced.
no more ds-1.

that surprises the heck out of me. I hate Peavy and I looooooooved his tone! It was REALLY reminisant of his Extremist days but with a modern twist. Sounded killer live IMO.

Anuj, Thanks for getting more details. I only got a chance to ask Joe about them for maybe a minute or so. I did remember him saying he wasn't using the DS-1. I thought his tone was great. Definitely had more saturation on the gain versus the DS-1 thru his Marshalls. Of course, it still sounds like Joe, but the voicings are different.

That's pretty cool. I've always found Joe's
distorted tone
to be too buzzy and "transistory" to my ears.

Now if somebody could talk mr. Himself into switching to pure
tube tone
path, we'd all be in heaven. That DS-1 just doesn't belong there.

I think he started using it because he couldn't get enough gain out of Fender amps. I may be wrong though. These days you can get whatever gain you need out of a
tube amp
.
Everyone who's been to this year's G3 (myself included) say that Joe's tone was superior in just about every respect. I haven't been to the previous G3 shows, but from the G3 DVD I liked Vai's tone a lot more.
I guess I'm selfish. I want Joe and Steve enter a little bit of "arms race" (without entering the "cold war" of course).

SRV used the Tube Screamers even in front of his Dumbles and Marshalls. It had NOTHING to do with not being able to get enough overdrive from his amps. He simply couldn't get the tone that he desired from an amp alone. Which would also explain why he used over a dozen different amps, all connected to a custom switching unit, in the recording of "In Step".
Try to be as much of a purist as you like, but it's pointless and infantile to preach that going the all-tube route with no FX is "the way". Countless guitarists and millions upon millions of records sold easily prove otherwise.
