Sex and Religion Amp

For the Rescue Me or Bury Me solo does he use the Marshall Jcm800 or the Bogner XTC? I loveeee the tone on the song so I was curious

Re: Sex and Religion Amp

I can't actually remember - but I'll throw an extra wrench in the works for you:

Steve was also using a customized Soldano SLO-100R (100W rackmount) head as part of his rig during that time. Here's a photo of his Sex & Religion Tour setup:

Remove the censored name of that auction site, and the image will appear...

Re: Sex and Religion Amp

That's interesting cos I had a pair of Soldano heads to review for a magazine last week (an SLO-100 and an HR-50+), and when I played my Jem through the SLO-100 it reminded me a hell of a lot of 'Here And Now.' It wasn't 100% accurate, but closer than I've heard with any other amp I've played that guitar through.

wow nice, this makes me want to try one of these before I ever decide about jumping to a legacy or something, even though I think the head is almost as much money as a XTC >_>

Soldano's are nice for sure, but I'll never understand why companies decide to price gear that high, especially due to the lack of features.

yeah

for that amp it looks like there are 2 knobs on the back, the first is like ohm settings and the 2nd is??? is it like a hotplate built in or something?

Re: Sex and Religion Amp

Newbie, I would check out a Splawn Quickrod.

The head is half the price of an XTC, and IMO, it blows it away. It's really great for the whole Marshall JCM800 thing. It excels at 70s/80s hard rock tones. I have no problem getting a good Vai tone.

I like this, from their website FAQ:

Can the clean/crunch switch on the SLO100 be made footswitchable?
No, we don't recommend this. We've done this on one amplifier, but this is a difficult modification. When the channel is switched between clean and crunch, the volume goes WAY up. We recommend trying out a Decatone, an X99, or an X88R is you'd like more multi-channel versatility. If you already have an amplifier such as an SLO100, you could look at incorporating a Hot Rod 50 so you can add additional sounds to your rig.

ok, I like splawn products, I've been thinking about getting a splawn modded dinky that has an ofr so I trust em well enough

also would you say that it beats out the Legacy too, because I def want a new amp in like at least a year or 2 but I cant bring myself to get a Legacy since it is a signature amp and people know I like Vai so they will think I am some "fanboy" or something

Re: Sex and Religion Amp

I have to say (and not to get off topic here) that for a while I have been searching for my 'holy grail' if you want to call it that and I found it 100% in the bogner ecstasy (which I also think is the most general Vai tone amp if you sum it up). It was a relief to finally find it but there's no way I can afford it now so I'm looking to find something comparable in tone and versatility but cheaper. I'm thinking an EL34 type amp maybe a DSL or Stiletto; the Legacy just doesn't have the features (gain-able clean channel).

yeah, I am not worried much about the Legacy's gain because I have a Boss Gt-Pro but I mean I rather have the head amp be most the tone then relying on a Gt-Pro.

I'm extremely happy with my DSL50, especially with the gain at halfway and a boost pedal making up the rest (I like the Digitech Bad Monkey best, but clean boosts also work very well). Nice blend of clarity and saturation.

I've never played a Legacy, but I have played an Ecstasy (which is supposed to similar, if not better). The Ecstasy is a little darker, but its certainly not better than the Splawn. The Splawn just roars. You won't really need anymore gain with it either, although I use an Xotic BB Preamp as a clean boost to give a more "fluidy" feel, and it works really well in conjunction with it.

Here are my favorite Quickrod videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Imv9Iu-gBds (his treble is turned high though)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nFl9WC0f-Y

There was a clip of someone doing some Vai but I can't find it.
