Should I sell my Legacy combo to buy a Legacy head and cab.?

Hey guys, I have a Carvin Legacy and I really like it. The thing I don't like about it though is that it's really heavy. I do not like taking it places because it's a hassle. So I was thinking of buying a head and 2x12 cabinet because then the weight would be broken up. Also, if I wanted to play with different cabinets or amps I could easily switch things around and then back again. The disadvantage I see is that I would be spending more money on the exact same amp. So tell me what you think! Thanks

If you've got the cash, it could be worth it. Get a 2x12 or 1x12 for home practise and a 4x12 or something for larger gigs.

Does the combo and a head with 2x12 sound the same?

Yeah, they are pretty much the same. I don't really know, but I was reading on the Carvin board that the head has a master volume. The combo does not. So that would be a cool added feature. But it may not exist.

Wouldn't try running the head through a 1x12 like Two hands says though, speaker go bye bye. a single greenback or V30 can't handle 100 watts on its own too comfortably

Well, I don't know much about this stuff, that's why I said a 1x12 or 2x12 for home cuz I wasn't sure which was a better idea

or you could just buy a 2x12 as an extension to the combo and disconnect the combo speakers...however, my experience is that combos with semi-closed back speakers do benefit from also plugging in a closed back cabinet and using them both at the same time. You get the openness of the combo speakers...good for cleans, with the added thump in the low end for more aggressive sounds. I use this combination with my Mesa Nomad 2x12 combo and a boogie rectifier 2x12 closed back cabinet and it really sounds great when both types of cabinets are used together, all my speakers are vintage 30s as well.

That still doesn't solve you master volume issue, but that's a relatively simple modification for any qualified amp tech. The delta between what you'd lose on the sale of your combo and the purchase of a head would likely more than cover the costs of doing the modification to your existing amp, without having to deal with the hassles of the sale and purchase. It also doesn't solve your weight issue either, but lugging around heavy stuff builds character. Just an idea that might be more cost effective yet still gets you what you're after, mostly...

That is true, but I think he is wanting something more portable/versatile. Something that MAY help with your backache (to be read as "amp") is to get a case with casters for it. Not only will it help you move it around, but also protect it at gigs and on the road in between. Then you could have the open back 212 sound, add an extension and have a closed back 212 sound, and even get a 412 and have that as well. Then you have all of your options open (except the master volume). Its a little extra money to buy a case AND a 212, but it does give added versatility.

Yes, i think you should sell your combo (to me!!! ). actually, if you put a 2x12 cab under it, what more would you need? i think the combo and an ext cab are perfect. you would be able to just take the combo to rehearsal or smaller gigs and bring the ext cab for the larger gigs. i think that would be the best of both worlds.

do your own project! disassemble the combo and make a head+cab out of it! time consuming tho, but the result will be worth it i guess
