So I need advice on strings.

I Mainly use D'Addario's. But lately I have been trying other types of strings. Right now I am using Ernie Balls. I wanted to try Rotosound and Elixir. Any suggestions?

Re: So I need advice on strings.

sure, go buy the strings you want to try...
put them on you gutitar and play them...
then you can decide if you like them

seriously - no-one can tell you what strings you will like, try them all...

I went through all the strings you are talking about apart from elixirs, rotosound came a close second to daddario's but I thought that the G sting of the ernie ball slinkeys alsways sounded out of tune (to me)...
I also found tried several sets on the bounce to get the full picture.

its not a fortune is it ?
buy em and try em !

After trying everything I'm a Dean Markley guy, since mid 80's. It is definitely a personal choice and nobody is wrong in their decision as to what works for them.

I used to use Rotosound roto yellows (10-46) and i thought they were great.

The first time i bought them, i bought them because of the extra e string they give you in the pack, they are alright and were one of the cheapest in the shop.

But one day they ran out and i Bought some Ernie ball slinkys instead and to me personally i prefer the Ernie Ball slinkys to the Rotosound, they have a much brighter sound IMO, and i've been Ernie Ball's ever since.

Anyways hope that helps (But its all personal really)

Re: So I need advice on strings.

I haven't really tried too many brands, but I have mostly stuck with D'Addario XL120's for the last like 20 years. I am very happy with them, and I think I mostly use them because they have just been my strings of choice forever.....since I was starting off as a kid. They were the first strings I remember buying,,,I think cuz of a VAI ad in an old Guitar Player mag. It's more or less just tradition.....it feels weird to buy any other brand or type of string. THe packaging,,,everything,,,,it's just embedded into my psyche. Why change now? I kind of remember GHS boomers as being really metallic, SIT strings seemed to always break at gigs for some reason, and Carvins were,,,well, good but sort of dull sounding. Again, it's probably all just in my head.

That's originally why I used to use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys, but then I tried DR High Beams electrics, and the strings stayed bright for six months.

Sorry, this is starting to sound like an ad...

Anyway, back on topic, I personally say you should pick whatever makes YOU feel comfortable as a player and what sounds good to YOU.

Re: So I need advice on strings.

I agree with the previous posters, buy a set of each and try them for yourself.

After trying just about every brand of string I could find, I found that I liked the Elixir's. They seem to last alot longer than other brands that I tried, they feel good under my fingers, and they sound as good as any other strings i've used. I have been using them ever since.

Good luck, I hope you find the tone that you are looking for.

Rock on!

Re: So I need advice on strings.

I buy Harley Benton valuestrings at Thomann.de
Why? Because they're way cheaper than anything else. 0.99e per packet.
And they're actually good strings aswell. I can't tell the difference with D'Addario which I've used for over 10 years. They are wound consistently, they sound good, and they actually last quite long aswell.
I don't know how they do it, but well, they do.

I also tried Darco for a while, they're cheap aswell, but they are wound tighter or something, they just feel stiffer than most other brands at the same guage.

Re: So I need advice on strings.

I'm a hardcore Elixir player. Can't stand the stiffness of D'Addario, or the relatively average tone I get out of them. I had Slinkys for a bit, and that was an improvement, but the Elixir's kick my ass everytime with their awesomeness, both acoustic and electric.

Re: So I need advice on strings.

"Ernie Ball Rock N Roll Classic Regular Slinkey"

Worth a try and far and away better than any standard Ernie Ball string.
They aren't exessively bright when you put them on and tune and intonate far truer than alot of brands I've used over the last 25yrs.

Next favorite would be GHS Zub-Zero .010-.046

Dean Markley being my least favorite.

Re: So I need advice on strings.

Explain this "stiffness" with the DAddario strings. Do you mean it feels like they are under higher tension? I've never tried Ernie Ball or Elixir. Maybe I'm missing out on something.
