Re: So who's playing an Axe-FX?

As I said back in post 55, this is not doing my GAS rehabilitation any good. Come on folks, tell me it sucks and I really don't want one.

I think the best you'll get is "it's expensive and you might not want to pay for one..." which will be followed by ten posts about the cumulative amount of money people spent on various pieces of gear and how the Axe gets close enough for cheap compared to having purchased all the "real deals" out there.

Re: So who's playing an Axe-FX?

Oh the stuff it would replace has cost way more than the Axe-FX, this isn't a financial argument. Given that my (2nd) POD is dying, I see a little Christmas present for me is inevitable ...........

Nothing wrong with a little bit of GAS in that case. I just wish I had the lack of financial constraints to realize the dream

Re: So who's playing an Axe-FX?

I am really interested by what I've seen on the internet. The buzz for these things is out of control. I am still skeptical though. I guess I need to play through an AxeFX. Is this thing really worth 4 times the price of a pod x3 live?

I too was skeptical before I bought one but playing is believing.

Is it worth 4 times the price of a Pod X3? Objectively speaking, I and many others think it is because it's in a completely different class than the X3. The effects (in the Axe-FX) alone are comparable to an Eventide Eclipses. The Axe-FX amps are also significantly more dynamic and responsive than anything offered by Line 6. It feels like a real tube amp.

I'm sold on one to be honest.

Only question now is whether to go for the power amp + guitar cab route or FRFR monitor route.....

For what it's worth, here's how I think about that.

If you want to maximize the versatility of the Axe-FX then you should go the solid power amp with FRFR cabs or powered FRFR cabs. The power amp and speakers should color your sound as little as possible.

To be blunt, I feel there are (2) reasons why some players stick with a power amp (typically tube) and guitar cabs.

First, they can't make the leap of faith required for an FRFR rig. It is possible with the Axe-FX to get a tone through an FRFR rig that's just as good as that of a standard guitar rig. It's really not difficult if you're willing to spend a little time tweaking.

Second, they are used to pushing lots of air - they really like 4x12 cabs. Unless you use an FRFR cab that has multiple speakers like a 4x12, you're never going to push as much air with a 4x12 cab. But on of the beauties of an FRFR rig is they are very compact compared to most standard guitar rigs.

Re: So who's playing an Axe-FX?

The one thing I don't find appealing about the ultra is the fact that the unit itself doesn't add much (hardware wise) in relation to its sibling. I would like the Ultra to perhaps be outfitted with:

RRC2 (RJ45) interface to have a direct link to a Roland FC-300 foot controller and talk to it in VG-99 mode so patches could be displayed, edited, etc.
Dual USB interfaces (1 for editing its software and the second one assignable for either a foot controller or to daisy chain other units like a GT-Pro, Pod, etc.)
Toslink out
Firewire out
2 more send/returns and the ability to have the effect you're using in a send/return to show up as such on the display. Example, if I connect a Digitech Whammy, then you should be able to program that into the unit so that every time the whammy is plugged in, it'll show up as such.
a nicer and bigger display

For 2 grand, the above items should be included standard on the Ultra.

That's my laundry list anyway...

Jimmy
