speaker suggestions
I have a Carvin SX200 and I'm looking to put different speakers in it... They sound good on the clean channel, but when I play distortion, it makes a crackling sound... any one have a good suggestion?
Thanks,
Shane

Re: speaker suggestions
I suggest Vintage 30's. But you will get every recommendation in this thread. Speakers are so subjective. Different cabs, amps etc will all determine the right speaker. No one can tell you what's best for you. Like strings, pickups, tubes, pedals. We all have preferences. But you definitely want a quality speaker that will take abuse over time. The V30's have worked well for me and will continue to be my speaker of choice.

Re: speaker suggestions
Thanks. I'll give them a shot and if I don't like them, I'll go with something else.
Peace,

Re: speaker suggestions
Vintage 30s are a great choice, but you might want to look at some Webers. Great speakers for less than Celestion.

Re: speaker suggestions
Celestion G12T75s aren't bad neither. They sound excentuated in the highs and lows (
scooped mids
) if you like that type tone for distortion, and they're also on the bright sounding side. In comparison, V30s have a boosted midrange and in my opinion offer a better
clean tone
between the two.
What speaker is in the combo now?

BR12 British Series... I bought the amp in '98, and that's what the manual says....

Re: speaker suggestions
Vintage 30's are awesome, but I still like EVM-12s whenever I can lift, I mean FIND them
EVMs are crazy heavy speakers, so don't add two to anything that can't lift itself.

Re: speaker suggestions
Actually, here's another dumb question. My amp puts out 100watts RMS @ 8ohms... does that mean each speaker (there's 2) needs to be 8 ohms? I can never get the math right with the whole this many ohms per speaker deal... I surprised I haven't blown up my half stack already...

if there are two speakers and the amp puts out 8 ohms then you'll need two 16
ohm speakers
wiring in parallel .

Re: speaker suggestions
Yes, ohms matching can be confusing at first, but I'll throw you some general tips. Never hook a speaker load to an amp output with a higher ohms rating (i.e. 4
ohm speaker
load to an 8 ohm ouput). You can go the other way around though (i.e. 16 ohms speaker load to an 8
ohm output
), but you'll lose some volume in the process. Depending on the mismatch, a 100 watt amp could be reduced to say 75 watts with mismatch speakers (just an example).
So obviously, it's ideal to match ohms when you can. Since there are two speakers in your combo, there's some simple math here. If they're wired in series, you multiply. (4 ohm * 2 spkrs = 8 ohms total load) If they're wired in parallel, you divide (16 ohm / 2 spkrs = 8 ohms total load).

Thank you. That's what I thought, but I suck at math/physics...

The speakers that are in there now are 100w, 8ohms each.... so what should I go with if I get the vintage 30s? They have these on the Carvin site:

Would those be alright?

Re: speaker suggestions
Yep, those would be fine. Two 16 ohm speakers in series would result in a 32
ohm load
, or how you'll wire them in parallel they'll result in an 8 ohm load. That's probably how your current speakers are wired, have you checked the labels?
Those V30s should be much different from what you've got in there now. I'm pretty sure that BR12 speaker (has a large British flag logo that takes up the whole speaker, right?) is Carvin's rough copy of a Celestion G12T75. A real V30 will give you an alternate sound, hopefully you like it. I'm guessing you'll notice increased mids and increased presence.

Actually, I replied to you when you had the 16 ohm V30 speaker link posted, and that would be your best choice. Otherwise if you use the 8 ohm you'll deal with an ohm mismatch when you wire the two together.
I have a Carvin 2x12 extension cabinet with two 16 ohm Carvin speakers in it. They're wired in parallel to one jack, the resulting load is 8 ohms.
