Question

Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

Howdy all, during the Ultra Zone tour I caught Vai at a sound check and he gave me the pick he used, and now (years later...) I finally decided to use it instead of staring at it and it feels great! I'm just wondering if anyone knows what kind of pick it was (green with a little pic of his Ultra Zone artwork and a signature) because I would like to get more. Thanks!

I'm guessing it's just the same 1.14mm(?) pics you can buy in any decent guitar shop now, they're pink and brown i think. I use them and they're great!

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

I believe they're Ibanez picks. I saw a big gallery of all the picks that he's used over the past 20 years on all of his tours, and they're all the same, except for color. I saw a few of them had the Ibanez logo on them, so I just assumed all of the others were the same.

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

They're Ibanez picks. Music 123 sells some, just got them in, new product.

I made this thread at the Vai.com forums a day or so ago.

I was lucky enough to catch a pick he flicked out into the audience when I saw him in concert. It was the last song of the encore. . . For The Love Of God, it was an amazing experience.

I got home, I didn't want to mess it up or wear it out, but I did give it a very brief test drive, and INSTANTLY noticed that this thing was superior than my stupid Dunlops. The tip of it isnt wide and broad like most picks, the tip is perfect for fast picking stuff. Plus its not too thick, but more than rigid enough for good control, and its a very SLICK material. Its feels like lubricated Tortex. Ultex maybe? I dunno, Im not a pick connissour by any means.

I think my Fender Cellulose Heavy's sound the best, they have the clearest sound, but wear quickly. My Dunlop Toltex (.88? Green ones) and Gels have a longer life, but dont have any of the "snap" of the Fender, and they feel fat and awkward.

I REALLY need to get some of those Vai picks. They also have Paul Gilbert signature picks took, I'll probably get some of those too

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

They're definitely Ibanez 1.0mm.

Gex is right, ********.com has some, regular picks and Vai's new signature pick. His signature picks are 1.0mm.

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

I collect Vai's picks. I've got 107 all different and official so I know a little bit about this.

Nearly all of them are 1.0 and only 5 are made by Ibanez.

I will put them together with other memorabilia in my web very soon so you can see them.

107??? Now that's quite a variety. I would love to see that collection. Would look good in a frame on the wall! I'd love to see pictures.

I'm going to assume you've all been HERE

yep, but all of them are 2 sided and I'd loose one of the sides.

Give me a boring weekend and I'll scan all the picks.

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

How about Satriani's picks? I got one from Mike before the start of his "Love in Space" tour appearance in Boston with Deep Purple, and I'm not using it (so as not to screw up the cool little graphics), but I definitely liked the feel. The Fender Heavy's I';ve been using look badass (ocean turqoise pearloid) but are a little slick. Ibanez 1.0's as well?

I remember Joe saying that he used regular Fender heavies, in an older interview. Don't know about know, though.

I use 1mm or 1.14mm picks most the time myself!

Me too. My favorites are D'Andrea Brites. It's just an added bonus, that they're PINK.

Re: Steve Vai's Ultra Zone picks

4 dollars (before whatever shipping charges) for 6 picks is ridiculous. That's what 1 2 3 is charging.
