String recommendation..

Alright, I am building an 8-string guitar (not a bass).. which will be a 32 inch scale guitar (standard string spacing), so what I need to figure out is what strings would be long enough to fit that and which brand? I am thinking to use .10's - .70's. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: String recommendation..

Is the 8th string low or high?
I'm guessing low.

I reckon you'd need something a tiny bit stronger then a .70. Just my opinon though. I'm sure Meshuggah use slightly heavier.

With 10s, if you have a low F# string then I'd guess .80-.85 would be sufficient. I imagine it's going to be tuned to a low E, so the extra thickness would be all the more useful.

hm.. in a video he was in talking about his 8-string, im sure he said his low is a .70.. and also, yea the 8th is gonna be a low, but I plan to tune to F with the rest tuned to standard flat

I'd suggest an .80 for the 8th string. I played an 8-string Black Machine with that gauge and it was thick enough to feel normal yet easy to play on rather then sticking bass strings on it

Yeah I've seen that video and he does say he's using a .70 on the low string. Way too floppy me and if you listen to the video when he plays there's quite a bit of fret buzz, which can be expected at that tuning, but I would try to do a little more tension for less buzz. I've used .70's for standard 7 tuning before and it's nice, gives a nice fat tone and something to grab on. After switching from those to .46's in drop-d I had to readjust cause i was fretting too hard and everything sound out of tune for a while ;P

yea I did notice the fret buzz too.. but if it suits Marten then fine, good for him lol, but I hate floppy strings so it sounds as .80's would work the best... and also, since its going to be a 32" scale, what guitar strings would fit it, are there any?
