Suggestion for a compressor

Hello all!

I'm looking for a compressor and I really like Boss CS-3. Is that the way to go, or you have other suggestions? If it helps, here's my current pedalboard.

yo dude.. i have a boss cs-3.. it all of a sudden wont work with a power source, I will try to get it fixed at my store, but i grabbed a visual sound - route 66 yesterday!!!! omgggg.. it definitely sounds a lot different then the boss.. it is a vintage style compressor, i definitely dont run it with as much compression as the boss.. i use the overdrive side of it has a gain boost on the dirty channel of my fender supersonic 112... so basically..

compressor always on
makes od's sound great on the clean
dirty channel is set to a low-mid gain (srv'ish)
i use another od to give me a half gained lead sound
and i use the od on the 66 for high gain.. sounds wicked..

i should ask, what style are you playing? the setup i am describing is for blues, jazz, fusion, country, pop, rock.. you can shred on it but it isnt a metal sound.. i have a diff setup for my metal band.

Keeley compressor! The 4 knobber! It is compression orgasm in a box!

Edit: send in your t9 and ds-1, have Keeley mod em both. The Ds-1 ultra is to die for, and the T9 mods can send it back to vintage specs with audiophile parts, or the baked mod for more gain, I have the Flexi one and I heart it.

awsome, there is enough gain if u have moderate to high output pups.. but i like the sound better with gain 2 off, and gain 1 about half, then use a box to beef it up... it is very smooth, but with a good box, you really get that sharp pick attack and twang on the neck pickup.. it is perfect for country to classic rock.. wouldnt recommend for metal, maybe if you get the halfstack.. depends what kind of tone you are looking for.

shogun, I play many different styles, so I want something versatile.

S-O, my TS-9 has already been modified by myself, as well as my Crybaby. I think I'll do the the same to my DS-1 in the future.

What kind of mods does Keeley do to the compressor?

I used a Milkbox once, and it wasn't all that bad.

If you can afford it, buy one of Keeley's handmade compressors, though. They're very costly, but judging by Robert's other work, I'd say it's probably well worth the money.

Absolutely superb as well. I threw out the boss as soon as I tried the Keeley!I've had one for about 3 years now although I only use it subtly, but it does the job.

Hmm... $250, plus $30 Int'l shipping, plus $100 of Brazilian import taxes...$380 for a compressor... wow!

Too pricey for me.

I'll have to stick with 'retail' models...

You could build your own keeley/MXR/Ross clone for $80...

or Try a BBE opto-stomp which is a softer compresser.. which Im currently using... its too soft for country but is good for evening things out...

If I had the cash though I would like to try the keeley MXR/Ross clone but it should be no different from the BYOC mentioned above... Dont get me wrong I love my DS-1 SEM ultra mod!

so in summary... if you got the cash but not the time then go for a Keeley! otherwise join the revolution () and make you own!

I've got the 2 knob keeley compressor and it one of only 2 or 3 pedals I really use. I love the fact it's so easy (I just leave both knobs at 12 o'clock) and it sounds great, no tone sucking at all.

So, the Boss compressor is not a good choice at all? What about MXR DynaComp?

I want some kind of Vai compression. Does it help to narrow down the choices?

Its actually pretty decent out of the box IMO. But you can really improve the thing with this mod -

The 'Build your own clone' Ross Compressor clone is almost an exact component match to the Keeley 2 knob compressor. I have both. the BYOC was a quarter of the price.
