Tech 21 Sansamp PSA-1 users.... a question

Yo!
I've read so much about how awesome the Sansamp PSA-1 preamp is... I went to Tech 21's website and listened to their audio samples of the PSA-1, and i thought they sounded pretty awful. Is it possible to get better tones out of this unit than what i've heard?

The PSA-1 is okay.. Not great, it is an older design, after all.. The Trademark series is much better, IMO..

Maybe go looking for bootleg recording of recent Fates Warning live, JIm Mathios is running a PSA-1 from what I understand.

The thing is, no matter how far solid state has progressed; the extremely clean, and extremely high gain, tones are it's only selling points..

If you're looking for slight crunch, or light break-up, go tube.

I'm very happy with my Tech21 Trademark 300 head, but I run it clean, or full bore. I have no use for blues tones. Tech 21's Marshall emu will turn heads(had our amp tech thinking it was a JCM900 SLX when we cranked it the first time, he was convinced it had tubes)..

I had both the Tri-OD and the Comptortion, and I found them to be really good. The Tri-OD had the most amazing sound. It ended up burning out eventually, because of crappy power. I sold the Comptortion, because I didn't think that it had enough gain, but the drummer I play with loved it.

the PSA1 pisses all over a jmp1 and the majority of other preamps.
