Tender Surrender tone

I read this in an interview on Jemsite (check the vault!), basically Steve saying what he used on Tender Surrender:

That was a Bogner amp, going into 4-30 watt through a VHT power
amp. And I used an Ibanez gem and a guitar I call EVO. I also used a
BOSS DS1 and a cry baby wawa. There was some effects brought up on
the consul, but basically that's what it was.

Anyone have more detailed information? I'm just curious, honest.

Thaaaanks.

he was talking about the Bogner Ecstasy head. Not entirely sure which specific model. Someone else will probably know. EVO is a JEM7v, alder body, ebony fretboard, DiMarzio EVO humbuckers. The Boss DS-1 was before he started using the Keeley ones, I believe.

Yes, I know this. I was pointing out the fact that he was not yet using the Keeley modded ones.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I read a post from Mikey at Vai.com that Vai doesn't use the Keeley-modded pedals any more. People look to them as some kind of holy grail to getting his tone, but forget that he only used them starting from the Alive in an Ultra World era, and stopped before G3 '03. If anybody buys one so they can sound like Alien Love Secrets, they're in for a shock.

I'm almost done learning tender surrender, and my clean tone is spot on. I'm using a ds-1 through my marshall, but it sounds a little bit too bluesy.

hi,
sir Vai in alien love secret uses Bogner, old marshall (arredondo plexi and jcm 800 i think)and go at 4x12 with room mics(3 i think)2 at the corners of the room and 1 at 3' out of the cab.So he goes out from the d.i of the amp and go in a sansamp (maybe a psa1 but i suppose the old sansamp but i am not sure at all)into a speaker simulator and he mix this 4 or 5 lines to obtain a good sound that he didn't double (he added ,maybe, a 30ms or so of digital delay that make the track more fat). This is for me the sound. In the dvd alien love secret he explain it in the track juice but i don't know sir Vai is sir vai.I think he uses a d.i. (maybe avalon in clean sound) direct in the console and a bogner i am sure an ecstasy for distorted sound. The settings for me are the same like vai fire garden tour photo in his machines section of his web site.
I am not sure about ds1.(tone 10/11 o'clock-dist 11 o'clock-level 12/1 or so o'clock)
Api or Neve preamps and api eq maybe urei 1176 comp.
He 's got a lot of money and a friend like Eddie Kramer and He 's a disciplinate animal.
Aug!

Yeah that is a great song to learn.

I find with my Marshall for that Alien tone it helps if you scoop the mids a touch and lower treble a bit too, (Settings about treble 5 mids 4 bass 6) but I am sing a guitar with a dimarzio Double whammy so the settings may vary and I use no distortion boxes.

I would be intrested in what you do for the cleans I can never get them just right.
