Question

The black material in the trem route

Hi,

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew what the black material is that Ibanez puts in the trem route for protection of the finish? I thought if was felt at first but I'm not 100%.

Kind regards,
Myst

Re: The black material in the trem route

It's almost like a thin neoprene. The closest I could find was from a craft store.

That's the ultra cool RGT320Z in the color violet crystal.

I'm not sure but I think this finish is only available in Europe. Here's a video:

I'm told you can get 1/16" self adhesive neoprene sheets, 8.5"x11" sheet from the crafts section at Walmart for 50 cents, and it comes in various colors.

I guess you can use all sorts of stuff as long as it does the job well. But I was really curious about what Ibanez uses.

Re: The black material in the trem route

I think it's to protect to the finish. I guess when you take off all the strings for whatever reason (cleaning of the fretboard or other maintenance) and let the bridge rest on the cavity, the finish gets damaged if it's not there.

Its an adhesive backed foam rubber and can be found at Hardware stores in Iplex 100mm repair couplings for stormwater downpipes(well in Australia anyway). Its used as a gasket in the coupling.
If you cant find anything over your side of the world PM me your address and i'll post you over enough for a couple of guitars.
I use it for exactly that purpose when im restoring Ibanez's etc.

Hi, I live in Portugal and recently I pulled it out of my RG when I repainted it, never found anything and left it without. Could you be so kind and send me a little?

Thanks,
Nelson
