Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

I use dunlop Gator picks the 2mm ones. I also use my fingers, occasionally with a dunlop thumbpick.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

Tortex 1.14mm.

I also use Dugain horn picks sometimes. They are expensive but give an incredible warm tone and soft attack.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

I use Tortex 0.73mm (yellow) and 1.00mm (blue).

I used the yellows for years but when i started to concentrate on improving my alternate picking technique i tried the thicker 1mm blue Tortex and found this felt easier to play with.

I agree that flex in the pick is wasted energy but i also believe that for me anyway, a certain amount of flex is important to help me move across the strings smoothly and evenly.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

I've used the yellow Dunlop Tortex .73mm for as long as I can remember. I love the heavier gauge green ones for soloing but they don't give as much when I play chords. I love the orange ones for chords but they don't have enough bite for soloing. I recently had to use the purple gator grips or the Dunlop .73mm Lucky 13s as it was difficult to find yellow Tortex's for some reason. When I see them I'll buy 3-4 twelve packs at a time. I'd buy them all but I don't want to be that kind of a$$ that leaves nothing for the next guy.
The texture on the Tortex's is perfect too. On rare occasions, my pick will pick will pop up out of my hand from the way I hold it; kind of like how people hurl bottle caps across a room. This sucks when playing out but rough textured picks seem to keep it from happening often.
This is probably more info than you wanted to know...

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

For years it was Tortex 0.73's up to the 1.0's depending on the guitar or bass I was playing. Now I've settled on my own custom delrin picks (pink) at 0.8 mm. Just right and they feel a lot like Tortex. I fiddle with Red Jazz III's every now and then too.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

I've played numerous picks over the years. Fender, Ernie Ball, Herco, D'Addario, Dunlop Jazz III, Tortex, 500 Delrin, etc...

I found these by accident and I'm hooked! They're the Dunlop Tortex Wedge. They're a mm or 2 larger than the standard pick and the tip is sharper (not as pronounced as the Dunlop Sharp, so they work great for rhythm as well as soloing). I use the 1.14 mm for electric and .88 or 1.0 mm for acoustic strumming and flatpicking.

Good luck finding them in stores. I stumbled upon these by accident while shopping for a mandolin at Elderly Instruments. (12 for $3.49)

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

Ibanez picks with rubber grip are quite nice,
I also enjoy carving my own picks from old Starwars Tazos, they have a soft type of plastic that slowly gets worn away by the guitar strings which end up smoothing out the edges, not sure how good that is for string life, but they are fun to shape...
