The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

Alright all you jemsiters, its time to start talking about picks, what kind you use, gauge, and why you use them !

Purpose of topic
To inform and educate fellow jemsiters of pick selections and opinions.

How this topic will work
Users will post their favorite picks and then explain why they like them. I will add to this main post the pick type and then add each user who uses the pick and by their name, the gauge they use. Your opinion will stay in your post, and your pick preference and user name will be added to the list will stay on this post ( and if the topic grows bigger, into other posts as well ).
Feel free to PM me if you do not wish to explain why you use the pick you use or do not want to post in the topic, and I will gladly add you to the growing list.

Example:

Dunlop Big Stubby

Yousef - 3mm

Tip: If you want to quickly find your favorite jemsiter's pick, press CTRL+F and type in their user name and click find next.
Pretty easy yeah ? Lets get this topic going !
New feature added 10-12-2007 ! I will provide direct links to the Jemsiters' post on the main list for easy findings of explanations! Just click on their username in the list and you will be directed to the post where they explain why they like that pick.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

My favorite has to be Jim Dunlop's Ultex Jazz 3's. Very nice small size, leaves little room for error (like all the jazz 3's, besides the XL ones). I also like how they stick to your fingers pretty good, the sample ones they sent me were slippery, not the ones I bought though. I like all the jazz 3's, but definately prefer the ultex above all. I'm not sure on the thickness (they don't marks the bags), but I think they're about 1mm, maybe a little over.

Dunlop Jazz III (1.38mm, black)

Small profile, comfortable thickness and a sharp point. It seems to improve speed and surprisingly added punch to my sound (like turning a guitar's tone knob from 7 to 10). Nice for fast playing, but I think it's a bit stiff/bright sounding for clean. Previously used: Dunlop Tortex .88 for 5 years.

Dunlop Jazz III XL Reds

great picks, same size as a normal pick, keep one in your tallest pimphat, nice sharp point and good material+grip, fashionable, fast, powerful, aggressive, yet caring and warm..

Dunlop Tortex Jazz (H3 - the purple ones)

I used to use the black Jazz III's until I found these. I didn't like the material Jazz III's were made of and the raised logo on them annoyed me. These picks are the same shape and size but are completely flat and give a good sharp pick attack. They are really grippy too, like a really hard kind of rubber. I would never go back to Jazz III's after using these.

Dunlop Black Gold Jazz III, 1.14mm.

Because they are the best picks I've tried, and are easy to find everywhere.

Dunlop Jazz III Red 1.38mm

Excellent Pick , Small yet durable can withstand hours of Serious punishment from vast amounts of alternate picking. Excellent Sharp tip for string attacking. Really helped me build up my picking technique and improved my speed.

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

my fave pick is my 'amsterdam pick' i bought it in amsterdam, its black and has never lost its point got it in 1992.

i know thats no help!

others I like are:

Peavey heavy, fender, Dean Markley, Jackson all around the .88 mark.

Not so keen on Dunlops as they have a matt finish. (all my picks are 10yrs or older, i bought that many back then i've never needed to buy new ones) Though quite a few of them are now rounded at the point and etched along the sides from scrape slides. But there's plenty left with a good point to them. All are covered in teeth marks

Forever had a pick stuck out me mouth in the 90's like

Re: The Epic Pick Thread ! (Sticky?)

Dunlop Jazz III Ultex

Nylon Jazz III is good, but this Ultex version is absolutely the best pick ever made. The shape of the tip forces you to clean up your playing technique and allows seriously smooth and fast picked runs. They last well too. Ultex is a very hard material, and that's better for fast and accurate playing. Pick flex = wasted energy. Going back to a regular pick after using one of these for a while really lets you know how good the JIII Ultex is. Regular picks are just atrocious.

I'm not exactly sure of the gauge either, but it feels like more than 1mm to me. I think probably closer to 1.38mm or something.

Dunlop Jazz III 1.38mm, red.
They just feel right, nice sharp point, good grip and not too thick or to thin.
