two favorite tones I have heard for the style that I play in my band are EVH on Eruption and Dimebag on Cemetary Gates... But I would prefer the sound of Guthrie Govan and Greg Howe.

Re: The one players tone you most want.

Don't laugh, but Gary Richrath from REO Speedwagon had some good tones going on in the late 70s, and the 80s. LP and Marshall, some kind of mojo goes on there. I'm sure his Marshall was modded, though, listen to all that gain. Wasn't a huge fan of REO, but his tone was cool. "Keep on Rollin'" (or "Roll with the Changes" or whatever that song was named) comes to mind. I'm not searching for his tone, mind you. I use different stuff based on what the song calls for. Petrucci on Score was good, too.

Re: The one players tone you most want.

I would absolutely love to have a Four channel head. One clean, two lead style gain rythem channels and one lead channel. Not sure what kind of clean Id want but for the rythems Id love to have a Dual/Triple Rectifier sound capable of both the nu-metal sound and a nice grinding sound. Other Rythem would be the 5151 harshness with added bass. Lead would be the lovely sound of a Krank amp with its rich harmonics.

Re: The one players tone you most want.

i'm very close, pretty much there, with my own tone for rhythm. it's very tight and raw...almost that stryper, early metallica ONE sound. that is the best i can put it. for lead tone i haven't got that worked out yet but my fav would have to be....

RANDY and "Jack Butler"

i can't figure out how to get close to steve's tone in crossroads!!! i love that lead tone!
any thoughts?

I'm quite happy with my tone. Although I've been told it brings the following to mind:
Steve Vai
Jeff Beck
Joe Satriani
Andy Timmons

EVH and Nuno's early/mid extreme sound. Both still kick ass.

Re: The one players tone you most want.

oh, and Tool's Adam Jones... a breed appart as wel. Uses 2 to 3 amps simultaniously with some kind of split box to rout his guitar output x3. As a good friend of mine defined very well... the sound he produces... stands like a piece of solid concrete
