The Search Continues......
Well Ive owned the following
overdrive
pedals and Im not happy with the results....
BB Plus
Boss SD1
VOX Satchurator
TS9
TS9DX
MXRZW
MXR GTOD (this is the best so far)
Boss Blues Driver
Boss DS1
Some Danelectro POS
DOD YJM
Radial Classic
Radial Hot British
There are more I just cant think of anymore ATM.
Im running them into an
Egnater
Rebel 20 Head into 612s (2 80 watters, 4 60 watters both Celestions)
I want to set the amp slightly dirty and use the pedal to "overdrive" it or to run the amp clean and use it as a main gain station. So it has to have good gain but Im not looking for a metal tone. Im looking for more liquidy smooth glassy sexy tone that can crunch too. Again I dont want metal tones. Nor do I want to do Coldplay covers so just clean boost wont do. And I really dont want one that has that massive ****ing mid hump that makes the tone all honky.
So what are some OD pedals you guys use(d) and liked and why. This hopefully will help me end my search for the ultimate overdrive.

Re: The Search Continues......
Try a Marshall JVM410H amp, thats super flexible with lots of choice.
Maybe a Blackstar
pedal
with a built in valve is the option? Head some reviews on a guitar CD once and they were pretty incredible!

Have you tried the Fulltone OCD? Darin posted a clip of it with his JSX and it sounded pretty nice.

Re: The Search Continues......
Dude, you didn't like the "Some Danelectro POS". That's pretty surprising.
The Seymour Duncan Twin Tube series has received pretty high acclaim. They have a pair of Phillips-Sylvania 6021 tubes inside.

I've been wanting to try the twin tube mayhem, but haven't found one to put my hands on to see if it can be the metal Chuga chuga box to go with my satchurator..

Re: The Search Continues......
I have the new Ibanez TS-808 HW. The fancy new 'hand wired' TS. I must say, it is freakin awesome. Don't know if it's the mogami wire, the hand wiring, or what and to be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be spectacular, just good, but it is absolutely awesome. I have been using it for more of a Hendrixy/SRV type thing and it just floors me how good it sounds. They are a bit pricey but it sounds like what you are looking for. Unless you want to go out all out for a Klon Centaur that is.

Re: The Search Continues......
i love the bb preamp, but i hated the bb plus. i say go with a regular bb preamp.. ac booster is nice but it definitely boosts the mids, the bb doesn't seem to effect them barely at all.. the rc booster is nice but it doesnt have much
gain
.. id def say go with the bb

Re: The Search Continues......
If you've tried a large number of pedals and are still not happy with the
tone
, maybe it's something else in your signal chain you should be looking at?
New pickups, new amp, new guitar?
Not trying to be awkward, but it might be that the rest of your rig won't work with any overdrive/distortion box to give you the tone you're after!

Re: The Search Continues......
Mmm...here's what I would recommend based on whay you say you want in a OD/distortion pedal:
Barber SS Direct Drive
SD Twin Tube
Fulltone OCD
The barber will give you more of a "crisp" and crunchy sound, very clear indeed; the Seymour has more mids to it but it is the more organic sounding of the three (tubes do make a difference on this one), you'll have to push this one to its edge in order to get gainier tones; OCD will be the one that does the "going from OD to distortion" trick better, and depending on the version you get you'll get different bass response, still it will be the bassiest of the three and the one with more compression (on full gain settings)

Re: The Search Continues......
Thank you for the recommendations! I have heard clips of all of those (most were from pro guitar shops video archive) and they actually do a fairly decent demo. But for now Im going to go with the AMT California and the Marshall Jackhammer. The Jackhammer is for running thru my Roland Cube 80X. I use that amp to teach with. And I hate having to always hit a button on the amp to go from clean to dirty. So I just use a pedal. The TS9 I usually use is great but it doesnt go over so well for metal. So this Jackhammer should be a good fix.
As for what Jono said......

New pickups, new amp, new guitar?
Good question!
Well I just spent a crap load of $ getting a new guitar and new pickups for every thing. At the moment Im down to 2 electrics! That is the least amount Ive had since I started playing 17 years ago!
My (new) workhorse is a 2009 Ernie Ball Music Man Silhouette with a Dimarzio AT1 in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck and an Area 58 in the middle. The guitar is an Alder Body and has a maple neck and fretboard. I installed a .47 Tone Cap as well as a No Load Tone Pot to get just a touch extra output. The guitar has a 5 way multi pole switch. It has a 2 point tremolo with a brass block and a Tremol No.
My other guitar is a 2006/2007 Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster with a Rosewood Fretboard. (not that it changes the tone) The fretboard has been fully scalloped by Dean Cascione. It has a Dimarzio Virtual Solo in the bridge and an HS3 in the middle and a Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues II in the neck. Although I think Im going to change the middle to a brighter pickup because I cant get that much "quack" out of it, And I love that classic "quacky" Strat sound!
As for other things I have a Boss DD6 in the loop and occasionally I use a Boss GE7 and a Boss PS-5. As for in front of the amp, I have an MXR GT OD Custom Shop Over Drive and an MXR ZW44 Overdrive And a Vox Satchurator and a TS-9 DX and a Dunlop Zakk Wah. And all that goes into an Egnater Rebel 20. My cabs are a Egnater 212 with Celestion 80 watt 1/2 open back and an Avatar 412 carpet covered slant cab with Celestion Vintage 30s. And thats it. I try to use the least amount of pedals. So at max Ill have all of them in. Or just 1 overdrive and the DD6. Usually just an OD and the DD6.

Re: The Search Continues......
Well Ive had the AMT California Sound and the Marshall Jackhammer for a little over a month now and I really like them both. ATM Im using both of them into my Egnater Rebel. I also add in one of the following for low gain or a slightly dirty clean tone..... Boss DS1, MXR ZW44 and an MXR Custom Shop OD and an Ibanez TS9DX.
Im for once actually happy with my rig!!!! Ive never been able to say that and mean it. But I really like what I have! Although I wouldnt mind a better sounding delay than my Boss DD6. Maybe the TC Electronics one.
To be continued........
