After years of spending studio money on other things, I am finally starting to work on my home studio again. This is a project that is very important to me and long overdue. I was excited about some new developments this weekend and wanted to start a thread to track the progress and discuss gear and prices.
First the room…. I had already done some construction, which separated a large Formal Living room/Dining room into two separate rooms, the smaller of the two (12 X 12) being devoted to my studio. Negotiations with my wife were fruitful and we are tearing down that expensive wall this weekend. Bye bye expensive Ralph Loren paint, drywall, studs and insulation. I must be crazy, but this will more than double the space for my studio.
I have ordered a sound proof, double glass, French door for the main entrance and a smaller door for the back, which emerges into the kitchen. We have also ordered black slate tile for the floor. Hardwood was considered, but the slate plays with the multi-colored slate theme in the rest of the main floor.
I presently have a very large, custom-built, Wheatstone analog console. That will be replaced by the
Control 24 console and the pirated version of Pro Tolls I presently have at home will make way for a pro Tools 24 Mix3 rig. At a cost that exceeds the price of a new car, this will take a couple months. In the meantime I hope to install Digi 001 on my Mac G-3 and use my old console, just to get the ball rolling.
Perhaps I am foolish to invest money in a studio to record stuff nobody will ever listen to, but nevertheless, I am very excited to get started. The big hammer connects to the wall this weekend. We have rented a storage facility for my present gear so we can clear the rooms and work quickly. Scott was kind enough to lend a helping back and pickup bed to move the old dinosaur of a console and the analog machines out.
People, I am so stoked! I cannot wait to get started! In the mean time, all my guitar gear has been moved to the work studio, which means there is a good chance some more music will emerge from it.
