Tone like corn chips... - tone advice appreciated

* * * * *Hi Jemsters. * I play a 7V straight into a MESA triple rectifier. *I know, I was dumb to have expected a nice lead tone straight out of the head when I bought it, but now I am stuck with it. *BTW - my rhythm guitar tone roolz tho. *Sounds like Petrucci kinda. *Anyways, like everybody else here, I like sustainy lead. *This seems impossible to achieve through my head that provides nothing but dry crunch. *I have tweaked both distortion channels for about a year now to no avail. *I even threw a delay in the effects loop but that doesn't really change the dryness of it. *People told me that a tube screamer or other such smoother od/dis pedal with only a small amount of gain but medium volume would give me more sustain, but it did not significantly - it just sounded messy. *I tried a compressor, but I don't think I am using it correctly. *I am not sure where to put it in the chain of things or how to set it.

* * * * *Basically, I am sure other people have had this problem before and I know you guys know a lot about good tone. *What I have been using for my lead sound is a shame - *I put a digitech RP-20 before the face of the amp and play it through the clean channel ( let's just say digital tone and me do not go too well *:lame: *, at least not Digitech's distortions ) *What I am striving for is a way I can use either my vintage overdrive setting on the clean channel of my amp, or the modern channel to sound exactly like Steve Vai's lead tone. *

* * * * *If anyone has any advice where I can at least achieve more sustain, I would appreciate it! If not, I may just have to sell my MESA and go order a Legacy - which I adore. *Thanks!

Tone like corn chips...

You might want to try running an EQ (pedal or rackmount) with a massive mid boost.. This would give you more 'throat' in the sound, as well as slightly increasing the sustain..

Just a thought..

* * * * *Thanks Tosh, that actually helps a bit. *I guess it's pretty hard to make an amp like the rectifier something it's not.
