Tool
I was wondering if anybody here knows how Adam Jones gets such a thick sound. I mean what kind of rig is he working with? I have the new June Guitar World and he is on the cover with some silver burst
les paul
's and some have P-90 in the neck and something else in the bridge, but what kind of amp/cab/effects rig is he working with?
On a side note I think he does not receive nearly the amount of praise he deserves for his guitar work. His licks are truly original and that is why Tool has such a following and after being absent for a number of years they still come back on top.

Re: Tool
Honestly he's an amazing writer and I've always loved Tool music. But none of his work is very technically challenging, so that's probably why he doesn't get as much praise as he should. I did see a live video of APC on Conan once and Billy Howerdel is a pretty sloppy player, then again he could have been having an off night.

Re: Tool
I'm not even a casual tool fan, but from what I've read he multi-amps (live and in studio). This means he has multiple brands running thru the mix at a single time.

There have been some songs I swear he used a Fender, Marshall and a Vox all at the same time on, at least that's what it sounds like!

That's quite an ear if you can hear that. Not sure if I could decifer someone's sound into mutiple amp's if they used more than one. I would probably just assume it's an amp I've never heard and why I couldn't explain what amp is being used.

Re: Tool
Tool is a fantastic band and there is nothing wrong with the way Adam Jones plays guitar.
He gets a lot of stick on this website, mainly because people compare him to the likes of
Steve Vai
and Joe Satch...
I think his rythym work is original and really distinctive... it might be really easy to play for most of you guys... but you have to admit that these guys are coming up with some really off beat, rhythmic riffs (which are a lot harder to compose in the first place)
Admittedly, I'm a huge Tool fan. I just don't think he deserves a lot of the slack he gets. Does anyone remember that band Nirvana that changed the world of music (I'll get hammered for that comment)??????? Not exactly challenging guitaring

Re: Tool
Adam's a big Deizel user but also throws the odd Marshall into the mix. Live, it's (2) Diezel 1/2 stacks and a Marshall bass head. All were using Mesa 4x12 cabs as of last week when I saw them in Denver. The interesting thing is that he really doesn't employ much gain as opposed to what most people might think. Typically, his amps are cranked just enough to begin to overdrive. It's the multi-amp setup that really gives him that incredibly thick tone.
Adam's also a pretty damned good technical player. Just because he chooses not to indulge in musical masturbation doesn't mean that he lacks the skills

I'm well aware he's capable of it, he just does use it in his writing much. Which I feel is right, if tool albums had nothing but technical guitar riffs they wouldnt have that dark ominous feeling in the music which I love.
