Triaxis - with a marshall el34 power amp
Has anyone tried this ???
I am interested in 'heavy' sounds particularly the recto sound.
I know a lot of users use it with a simulclass 2 : 90
power amp
, but i cant afford a new power amp (i have a marshall el34 100 watt per side power amp)
any help would be appreciated

If I were in your position I would check out comments on both the gear reviews on
www.harmony-central.com
and the HC forum.
Be prepared for some 'interesting' views on the HC forum...
I would do a search on it-this is what I did when I wanted to know about putting an ADA MP-1 through a 2.90.
cheers

ive read the reveiws on HC and i dont know, some say the triaxis does recto well, some say it doesnt, plus they all seem to have 6l6 based powera mps.
i realise the triaxis can do many things aprt from the recto sound (its why im interested) but the 'heavy' thing is a big part of what i do
how would you say £800 is for a s/h triaxis ??/

800 quid, hmm not bad, is about the going rate
try and knock him down a little (look for scratches and say you will have to replace the tubes!
)
is this instead of the
dual recto
rackmount head?
can you define 'heavy' sounds for me? that way I may be able to help better.
(if you are interested in 6L6s, I have a 9200 for sale at the moment)
cheers
Simon

its from some place i found on here, yeah possibly instead of the recto (cant decide).
Heavy = nothingface, sick of it all, korn, human waste project, one king down, gorilla biscuits, dromningman etc etc - get the idea ?

not sure what Marshall power amp I used with the triaxis as it was just a loner while the store ordered a new 2:90. It was a 3
space rack
i think with lots of tubes. Anyway the 2:90 was DEFINATELY heavier and more in your face. The Marshall power amp added a little "buzzyness" which was cool though because its not near as much as the usual Marshall. The cleans on the Marshall power amp were out of this world. Incredible. The 2:90 seems to have more volume and power. The Marshall's volume control was a LOT less sensitive which was really great because you can get in between full blown and no volume. Is anyone elses 2:90 like that...I mean its either incredibly loud or incredibly soft? Anyway... I hope this helps some.

I really like the tube compression that EL34's tend to get when pushed. *You can hear this a lot with Satch's live stuff. *The Triaxis is (IMO) the best midi
tube preamp
available. *I use mine with a Mesa 20/20 which is EL 84 powered. *I like it that way. *I tried out a 2:90 with it and for the volumes that I play it at, the 20/20 sounds better to me. *I have often thought of running it through a EL34 power amp. *I bet it would sound fantasitic when cranked up. *Low volumes I still think the Mesa 20/20 or 50/50 would be the best way to go as they don't color the sound quite as much as the EL34 amp would. *I think it's more a question of how loud are you going to play. *My suggestion: if you are going to play loud, keep your EL34 amp for the color they produce when played loud. *If it's for practice I would sell that amp and get a 6L6 or EL84 based power amp to let the preamp shine more, the EL84's are going to give you more of an edge and "splat factor" than the 6L6's but it depends on taste. *Try them all at your preferred volume if you have the opportunity.
Good Luck!

I don't know if this is any help, but I am running my triaxis through the ruturn jack of an effects loop I had built into a super 100w lead head (old marshall). I think that's tubed with EL34's, in fact I am pretty sure. I found that with some eq'ing + compression in the triaxis effects loop that you can get a pretty mean heavy sound out of it, so it'll sound cool I think! I got my triaxis for 750£, but it's a US one so I had to get a transformer for it. 800 isn't bad, be prepared to ppay it but haggle with the guy like simon said!
I managed to get a good taste of the sound yesterday when I got my amp back from the studio where it was and put it at home. It was very heavy, and the triaxis is definetly worth it, get that and it will sound good. If you are not happy with the sound, then try upgrading your power amp later, but I think it sounds good through EL34's, so go for it! I don't think you'll be dissapointed!

The kind of bands I like are very varied, but my sound etc tends to gravitate (loosely) towards the following kind of bands: Morbid Angel/Hypocrisy(now there's a heavy sound!)/Carcass/Machine Head/Sepultura(roots)/Nevermore etc, but like the kind of lead sounds that Michael Amott/Trey Azagtoth/QueensRyche/Bill Steer/
The rythm playing sound I tend to go for is heavy crunchy chunk, sort of a bit like carcass/machine head etc, in that kind of vein, with a decent amount of gain (but not too much) and the bass crammed up as high as possible without the speakers/amp "farting". Then a bit of mid to fill up the sound a bit. I mean, you can get whatever sound you want from the triaxis (as long as you like boogie!), and it does sound cool through EL34's.
For lead sounds I tend towards tighter more focused sounds, with a reaqsonable amount of gain, so that I can control the tone with the volume knob a bit, which does make a cool audible difference using the triaxis! mmmmm.... Sounds that are maybe a bit comparable might be trey's solo sound from
morbid angel
, I do apply a bit of chorus to it etc blah blah, you know trhe score
, I also like a more bluesy sound at my disposal as well, so I am looking for that at the moment. The cool thing is that I keep on tweaking and experimenting with this thing. So many cool sounds! But it does take a while to find stuff, and if you get the triaxis, then be prepared to spend quite a while messing with it. And read the manual, it really does help...
But yeah, if you want to play hardcore/metal/etc, then it'll suit you fine. You'll be able to get nice tight sounds out of it, thrashy sounds, massive monster heaviness and everything else. And the EL34's are fine. If you are not 100% happy with the sound, then you can save up for a new power amp
, but running it through the return jack of a marshall super lead head works fine for me!
I'd get one, I haven't regretted it in any way at all!
James

cheers! Hope you get the cool sound you are looking for! Just remember, you can always upgrade as you go along, so my philosophy at the moment is to buy the best that I possibly can, wait a couple of months and then buy the next beit and make do in the meantime, but yeah, tell us what you go for (and wether it sounds good!)
Good Luck mate,
james
