Tube Amp Choices

I might get a tube amp soon and am trying to narrow down my choices. I'm considering the Carvin Legacy and V3, the Peavey 6505, the Peavey JSX, and the Peavey Triple XXX. I don't want an amp that's too "nasaly sounding" or has too much gain (i don't play metal), which is why I the peaveys are sorta iffy. Are there any other amps I should be considering that are in the same price range as the ones I mentioned?

Peavey Valveking. Great amp for rock, and not metal.

Re: Tube Amp Choices

I would suggest a fender hotrod or deville or the Valve king as suggested above

Re: Tube Amp Choices

Are the JSX and Triple XXX amps nasaly sounding compared to other amps? Can anyone tell me what a Carvin V3 sounds like compared to the other amps I have mentioned?

Re: Tube Amp Choices

By not "nasaly sounding" or has too much gain", do you mean an amp that would be good for classic rock tones? If so, marshall is the only way to go (or amps based on marshalls, like laney or the carvin legacy).

Re: Tube Amp Choices

How could i have forgotten Marshall, Yes I think you should try a DSL 401. You should also add how you are going to use the amp

Re: Tube Amp Choices

The Legacy was very very warm and smooth so I second it. Oh or a used Mesa Stiletto Deuce. Maybe a Stiletto Trident if you can find that

Re: Tube Amp Choices

I like tones with a good amount of gain, I don't play classic rock. I'd like an amp with a lot of gain like a JSX, but I don't want a nasaly sounding amp. Take for example when Satch hits pinch harmonics using the JSX, it sounds sort of "squeaky" unlike Vai who's pinch harmonics sound "fuller" IMO. That's why I'm seriously considering the legacy. Also, how much do mesa dual rectifiers and triple rectifiers cost?

Re: Tube Amp Choices

Now, I haven't played a Legacy, but the one thing I hear form people, is that it does not have tons of gain, so if you are into lots of gain, unless you run a pedal, up front, to add, you may not like the Legacy, in that sense.

Re: Tube Amp Choices

Does Mr. Vai use his TS9 almost all of the time on the distortion channel then? Because his tone sounds pretty high gain to me.

Re: Tube Amp Choices

His tone isn't as gain-y as it may appear. I used to think so, too, until I paid real close attention to his recordings. Alot of it is the VOLUME at which he is playing. I used to equate gain with sustain, but as I went on, I actually learned to use less gain, and am just as happy. I actually thing my tones have improved, as well as my playing, because I''m no longer muddying up with gain.

Re: Tube Amp Choices

I tried the Peavey JSX, Triple XXX, and 6505+ today and I wasn't very impressed. On the ultra channels the JSX and the Triple XXX sounded very "fizzy". The JSX had the nicest clean channel, but the distorted channels just didn't sound smooth to me and sounded too thin. I haven't tried out a Legacy or a V3 yet, but they'll probably suit my tastes a lot better than the Peaveys, which sound to me like they are better suited for metal.
