ive got a white horse amp head and cab but its too big to move up various floors and too powerful! im moving into a flat and will be forced to use headphones.
Id like to know if i buy the podfarm gx could i use it like an amp or do i have to buy something like the Line6 Pocket POD Express.

Re: using pod farm as an amp

I guess you mean the POD Studio GX with Podfarm. In that case it is not really an amp replacement as you will always need a computer to use it. The device has a heaphone / line out plug, but is powered using the usb port and it is primary intended for recording.
Both the pod express and pocket pod have a headphone output, but are battery powered.

The bigger pods, like the Xt and X3, have a headphone and a line-out, which you can connect to anything with a line-in, like a hifi set.

Re: using pod farm as an amp

I have a Line 6 Gearbox Gold package (predecessor of the Pod Farm) that I use with my PC and it works great. I have inexpensive powered recording monitors (M-Audios that cost around $100/pair) that are feed by my audio card (M-Audio Delta 2496?). It all works well together for practicing.

Re: using pod farm as an amp

I have both pod farm and its predecessor, gearbox. I love em both. There is one thing I would like to caution you about. I started out with the toneport ux1 and gearbox and then upgraded the software to pod farm and kept the toneport but the toneport does not work well with Windows Vista. Every 40 seconds the sound would stop for a split second. Talk about a concentration breaker and it was impossible to record with. If you have a pc with vista it might be a good idea to see if you can find someone who uses the newer pod farm interfaces and see if they work correctly with vista, or will you end up in sound-glitch hell. Fortunately I also have a pc running Windows XP and it all works very well. BTW, the line 6 presets that come standard suck but just a little tweaking is all that's needed, usually you just need to dial back the effects. Once you have installed the software you can also go to the line 6 website and download custom tones created by other line 6 users. I have found some really choice presets there.

As far as recording with pod farm..... HELLYEAH!! Some ppl don't care for it for recording but I have had very good results. Since vista is a problem for me with the toneport, I just run the program on the pc with XP and run the output from the toneport to my 8 channel midi controlled mixer which is connected to the pc running vista and record it using sonar 8. Works slick as ****!

Hope this helps you make up your mind.

p.s. line 6 has a model expansion pack out called metal shop. I highly recommend buying($24.95) it if u are into metal. It has a great selection of amps dedicated to metal, from 90's grunge to this centuries metal monsters. I love the Bogner Uberschall model!!!
