Using the tube overdrive or clean channel with a pedal?

What do you recommend? I was watching an Andy Timmons video where he said his main tone is achieved using a Tube Driver with the clean channel of his Stiletto. I wondered what is the most common usage? I cranked my Genz Benz Black Pearl at rehearsals the other day and didn't need my BB+ but then wondered if I would be able to use the amp's boost function to actually boost the volume rather than the gain which could be handled by the BB+? Or would it just boost the gain not the volume?

I can't test this at home as I have to really crank it to get the true tone.

There is no "law" how to use it.

Everything that sounds good to you and helps you implement YOUR tone is ok.

I sometimes use a TS on the clean channel of my amp, sometimes I use the DS-1 or TS on my already distorted channel, to boost or compress the sound.
Noone can tell you what YOU will sound like doing it. So the thing is: You will have to try yourself what sounds good for you...
