VHT Pitbull Ultralead? Opinions? Soundclips?

Hey guys

Still on my perennial quest to find an amp I like, and Since there is apparently a "running bet" on what I'm going to end up with
I thought I'd throw another amp into the mix.

I want some information or opinions or soundclips dealing with the VHT Pitbull Ultralead.

Please let me know what to expect from this amp if you've ever used it.

Thanks guys.

I can tell you only a little...

The one I tried out a while back had dying(maybe dead) tubes in it... It uses KT-88's, and from what I've heard, they go really fast, so I'm not surprised that a store floor model was dead...

As such, I couldn't get a good tone out of it. It has searing gain (more than my 5150) but the EQ was unmanageable at the time.

A friend of my has the other Pitbull head, the CLX or whatever it is... it sounds absolutely amazing, and I was really surprised I couldn't get the same sound out of the Ultralead.

After talking to some folks at VHT, they said the Ultralead should easily cop the sound of the Hundred/CLX and then blow yer head off from there...

I never found one that worked right, so I dunno. I do know the Hundred/CLX is great, and it's amazingly quiet at very loud settings -- no hiss and rumble when you're not playing.

Hope that helps...

Ryan

I have a CLX 100. I chose it over the Ultra. I found the two amps were tonally different. Both amps have a dark tone, tons of gain, and are really loud but I found the Ultra to be much darker than the Clx and there was nothing you could do to get rid of the "darkness". I (note the word "I" ) found that after playing the Ultralead the Clx was like breath of fresh air. It seemed to be more opened and less compressed.

My only suggestion is try both amps if you can... I think you'll chose the Classic (clx).
BTW My Clx has the best clean I've ever heard and the high gain stuff is huge sounding.

Well I was offered a pitbull not sure what model yet, and not sure what condition, but I know it's the head.

Does anyone know how much they usually go for?

Thanks

I have a two friends with VHT's

One is in an indie band and tours with it-he thinks it is great

The other bought it while he was at GIT in LA and thinks it is great too.

So I guess it is pretty versatile

Best wishes

I think they did use boogies but in the last Mick T interview I read, he said that both he and Jim Root had recorded most of Iowa using VHT Pitbulls. I think it was Guitarist magazine October 2001.
