Hey yaŽll... this is my first thread... and first imput...

Kinda strange Topic, since we're on the JEM site forum and all, but...

Vintage!!

I wouldn't necessarily call it vintagey...but I have a vintagey vibe going on that I have tweaked for my 'new' sound.

Marshall JTM-45 Head
Boogie DC-2 (up for sale though)
Carvin Legacy 100Watt Head
and a couple of other's that don't precisely count.
Boogie 4X12 and Carvin 2X12

Gibson '56 Goldtop Re-Issue
Gibson Custom Shop Classic '57
Fender American Standard Hot Rod

Pedal Board consists of the following in order from Guitar to Amp:
Volume (Morley)
Wah (Dunlop)
Comprossor (Analog Mike's)
EQ (Boss Ge-7)
Distortion (Boss DS-1)
Fuzz (z-vex Fuzz Factory)
Chorus 1 (Boss CE-2)
Noise Gate (Boss NF-1)
Chorus 2 (Boss CE-1)
Delay (Line 6 Delay Modeler)

I have put away the Ibanez guitars for a bit while to experiment with the vintage vibe and new tones that the above equipment lends me. *About 6 months ago it was only Boogie and Eventide. My ears are really liking the change.

I'll have pics soon.

Cheers!

Vintage!!

I have a 1968 Fender Bassman (in the custom quilted maple cabinet I built for it, of course. LOL). *
SWEET clean tone, and it can break up nicely if pushed. *Built like a brick sh!thouse. *
Great amp. *No complaints.

I think my most 'vintage' guitar would be the RG-ART (F97 1), and the RG-GEAR being a close second (F97 2).

Only real vintage stuff I use is a '52 Fender Deluxe which is cool because '52 was one of the few years that it was the 12" with 10 watts.

I like vintage stuff, but I prefer newer just for reliability. *Right now, I can't really justify spending thousands on a, say, 1950 Fender Pro just to have it break down on me a week later, or on the first trip to a club. *I would like a mid-50's strat though. *For now I go for the higher-end or boutique stuff. *Some of it at least... you can get a lot of better sounds than with the older equipment, and in most cases it will be a lot more reliable.

" ... you can get a lot of better sounds than with the older equipment" i don't really think that's true, if it was people would have put away their vintage fenders and gibsons and bought a new guitar. *the tone of vintage instruments is unbeatble or at least for most genres, maybe not thrash or shred but generally speaking, vintage stuff gives a better tone...

not that i would know this having not tried out anything more than 15 years old lol but still ... :silly:

Well I guess my dream "rig" would be a mix of Eric Johnson's simplicity... Dave Gilmour's "more than life sound" and "the Edge's" versatility... soundwise...

I think it's also safe to say that (not all, but) a large majority of vintage users just like the stuff because it's old and won't accept anything newer. *They will deny it, but that's usually what it comes down to.

But anyways... any time I go to a store with a good selection of 30's-70's gear, I test out what I can. *Some of it is neat, but it's pretty much how lucky you are. *You can try out 100 old Sears amps that will sound like crap, and then find one that sounds priceless. *Same amp, just how well they held up I suppose. *Also, most of the older gear will do one sound and do that well, now adays you can find amps that really do have multiple uses and are good at several things. *I don't think my eggie's clean tone is really better than my fender's, just different... but the fact I can use it for an entire song without having to use 3-4 OTHER amps makes it more valuble to me.

HA! I never even looked at it like that!!

I am a big fan of vintage PEDALS as opposed to the actual equipment. *Both my Les Paul standard and classic are 're-issues' and the amps I play are far from it. *I agree with Jay that vintage amps are a little pain to bear sometimes because of some fragile components (especially spring reverb tanks)...however, vintage gear has a high maintenance price tag unless you of course are the kind of individual that can maintain them on your own well good!!!

I have played some seriously vintage stuff thanks to friends who do own a 62 strat, or a a real 60 Les Paul Classic, and frankly, the tone is great...but nothing I couldn't achieve with newer equipment. *The maintenance though...sheesh...not to go too far off topic here but think of it this way....

SRV: hands down one of the greatest tone monsters that ever lived. *HOWEVER, his .13-.52 guage strings wreaked serious havoc on his late 50's(?) strat. *The setup on it was painstaking for his guitar tech as the bridge saddles were 'modified' and tooled with to accept the extra string pull back (ever notice he had 4 springs pulling that damned trem back!?) and his neck had to be constantly looked at for getting the right amount of relief in because of the tension (older strats don't have great truss rod tension removal the bow much easier). *I mean his guitar tech had his hands full modifying his guitars for him...that 's the price of godly tone I s'pose.

Chris Duarte: *Vintage late 50's strat...killer tone, not so heavy guage strings, but get this. *He sweats so much that in one night of playing he's done enough damage to the old nickel plated bridge and soft metal pots under his knobs that they've become brittle. *So his tech sealed his pots in little plastic baggies so that his sweat doesn't corrode them further (notice they don't 'replace them') and replaced certain saddles with graphite nuts tooled to match the vintage trem.

There are a lot of sacrifices for wanting to stick with vintage gear. *The tone is there..but you should expect to learn a little (rather , a lot) about guitar setups and maintenance if you're gonna stick to vintage. *

I won't even mention Jimmy Page's les paul....oi the pain.

My 2 cents.

Vintage!!

I change my pedal board, etc all the time, depending on the gig, etc. *

Usual setup:

-Mesa Boogie Mark IV Short head
-Mesa single 12" wide body cabinet
-Furman pedal board
-Ernie Ball volume pedal
-Boss TU-12 tuner
-DOD Digital Delay (DFX-9?)
-Original E.H. Small Stone Phaser
-Copper Dunlop Crybaby 535Q Wah
-Fulltone Ultimate Octave
-Fulltone Fat Boost

Alternates:
-Digitech Whammy 1 reissue
-Ibanez AD-80 and AD-9 analog delays
-MXR Phase 90
-Ibanez TS-808 and TS-9 Tube Screamers
-Ibanez Tube King
-Dunlop Copper Crybaby
-Budda BudWah
-a bunch of other vintage Ibanez and EH pedals. *Just depends on the gig.

I'll occasionally play with a blues band. *When I do gigs with them, I use:

-Matchless Chieftain Head
-Single 12" Celestion Matchless cabinet
-Simpler pedal board:
-Volume pedal
-Copper Crybaby
-Ibanez TS-808 and TS-9
-EH Small Stone Phaser

Sometimes I'll just take the Mark IV and a wah though. *I'm always tweaking things. *

PS. *I JUST sold my '63 Blonde Bassman Piggyback...loved it, but...it just wasn't "me" tonally. *

LOL *Really...you don't want my life, Ripley...it's NOT that exciting! *My gear maybe, but not my life. *

Oh yeah...and for guitars:

When using the Mark IV, etc for my regular band's gigs, I'll usually use the following:
-Ibanez USA Custom Exotic Wood Birdseye Maple model in natural
-EB/MM JPM Model with all options (Mystic Dream)
-Been using the Crystal Planet JS a lot lately...love it! *But..it's kinda heavy *
-DNA #137 sometimes
-I've taken a few other USA Customs out too, as well as the PMC and GMC. *The DNA is definitely my fav JEM now though. *

With the blues band, I normally use:
-Fender 60's Relic Strat (3-tone sunburst, rosewood slab board, .010- .056 GHS Boomers)
-PRS Custom 22 Artist in Trans. Purple (quilt top, Artist package, etc. )
